@carolprudm That is a pretty cool technique! I personally keep my horse’s mane short and do traditional sewn-in button braids, but I have met people who like the “long flowing mane” look and are reluctant to cut or pull it … and the typical running/French braid doesn’t stay put well and looks a bit out of place in the dressage or jumping ring. This looks like an interesting solution, and doesn’t look like it would be hard to do!

@carolprudm TX for the link!

I will probably give that technique a try with my ThickerThanThick TWH’s mane that splits as well.
I roached last year & right now he has one ~4" thick section that flops the opposite direction from the rest.
I call it his Crest Indicator cuz as his neck muscle rounds, it flops to the same side. :smiley:

But I bet he’d look very sexy sporting those big rosettes…:cool:
& now that I think of it, my TrollDoll Driving mini might look good braided that way too < less mane tangled in the lines :yes:

@luvdogs72 I generally do this version which is pretty Braids for Dummies:

You just do a regular 3-strand braid down the neck, adding in & going lower as you go & finishing with an elastic.
Just comb the heck out of the mane so snarly hair doesn’t sabotage you & be sparing with any product that might make it too slippery (I’m looking at you, Showsheen! :mad:)
I use the teeniest drop of Cowboy Magic Detangler in my hands, then fingercomb that through the mane.

What do you do with the end of the braid though? Wrap it around? Do you sew it then?

You can also braid on top of the crest similar to drafters.

I used to square off the French braids as I think it makes the neck look better. Braid the first part straight down to the length of a nice pulled mane and then make a 90 degree turn and grab mane to add at the same length down the neck. I think the triangle of some french braids produces an optical illusion on some horses that can make a horse seem hollow necked. I also periodically tie broken braid binders around the braid to secure.

I think Grooming to Win has detailed instructions…

I personally can’t stand the “hanging” running braid. These are far better looking:

I spent a lot of time learning to do a running braid last year. To do so, I also watched a bunch of videos to learn, but had a lot of trouble getting it to stay up at the crest. Finally a friend showed me how to keep it up.

The trick is to after adding a section, when you pull the next section under the hair you added, make sure to pull it up to or even across the crest as tight as possible.

As to the tail, I roll it up like a button braid.
