Need shorter saddle blankets/pads

Does anyone make western pads and/or blankets that are less than 32"? Most of the ones I’m seeing are even longer, like 34" or 36". That covers my horses’ entire backs! I don’t have a limousine of a show saddle either. So far I’ve been able to find 24" pony size, or 32" and up. 32" will work but that leaves quite a bit in front and back.

Ideally I’d like to find some that would be suitable for local shows, but they’ll probably get more use for trail riding. I have an abetta saddle and and older simco, both are about 26" long.

The paint has a long back and is OK with the standard pads, but the half-arab and the TB are short-backed, and the pads go from wither to croup.

My go to internet tack sight is NRS and I saw nothing in 30" listed. I googled “western arabian saddle pads” and a few things popped up. Good luck.

30 inches are out there, avoid places that sell lots of show stuff, most of the oversized pads are designed to go under show saddles, look at barrel pads that are square, barrel saddles have shorter skirts

For regular working pads, a lot of the Pro Choice (not the super expensive, but the $100-$120 range) run 30". My one gelding has a super short back and even 32" is pushing it.

Mayatex makes shorter show pads - I think they call them Arab sized and they are 30" as well. I haven’t tried them yet, but that’s my next step as the 34" is miles too long and doesn’t fold under very well.

Oh… Impact Gel has a 30" pad as well, but that one you do have to look carefully for.

5 Star Wool Pads come in 30x30 and they are wonderful. I bought one and then a week later had to get a bigger saddle and bought the 32x32. Worth it.

Diamond Wool makes pads and felt ‘liners’ that work fine as stand alone pads in 30 x 30.

I also have a single 30 x 30 wool blanket that I use under my English saddle. Can’t remember the brand offhand, though- bought it at a local tack shop- as well as a 32 x 32.

Valleyvet has several in all kinds of 30x30s.

We have one of these in the 30x30 for everyday riding, that some also use for playdays and shows, if very fancy shows, with a pretty blanket over it:

I once got a nice felt pad for a song, but it was too long. Since it was felt, I had my boyfriend at the time trim it down with his table saw.:lol:

I too was searching for a shorter pad to go with my short backed Morgan! I found a nice rounded skirt saddle and this pad works really well. It falls just short of her hip.

Thanks for the tips. I found several that fit the bill when I searched using the terms “Mayatex” and “arabian.” And I picked up a cheapie felt liner pad from Chicks that I should be able to trim down with my heavy duty garden shears too. The Prof. Choice saddle pads look really really nice but many of them cost more than my saddle! (although I must admit I got a steal of a deal on my vintage Simco through e-bay!).

Ah, yes, mayatex are the little wool blankets I have, I think I have one in 30" and one in 32".

5Star!!

The Alpaca Horse saddle blankets are made entirely in the USA from our own alpacas.Folks, consider where your equipment is made.
Mayatex are from India. Nothing against India but if we want more jobs in the USA, then we should be buying as much US-made items as we can.
