Need some help - reins to romals?

I am planning to take Remy to an open show on the 21st. A friend I ride with suggested that he would look much more breed appropriate (and cool) if I rode him in the romals rather than the split reins we normally ride in.

I’ve used the romals a time or two but something is not translating to Remy. He’ll keep and hold his frame and speed in the reins, but riding with the romals yesterday I had a heck of a time. I know how to hold reins correctly, but I’m not sure I’m using them correctly, if that makes sense?

When you ride in split reins do you normally ride with a finger between the reins? As you probably know you can not do that with romal reins, and that could be the difference!
