Need some Ideas: Places to donate equipment and clothing?

I may have this in the wrong Forum.

I need some suggestions on places to donate used (but still great condition) show clothes and equipment. I am getting out of horses after 25 years, and I have SO MUCH stuff. I have been listing a lot on ebay, but honestly I don’t want to list everything and I was thinking if there was an organization that could use stuff, or sells items and the proceeds go towards a horse related organization that would be awesome. I thought maybe someone on here would have some ideas. I’m in WA state if that matters, but I am happy to ship things.

I know horse rescues can use blankets, but I’m not aware of any in my area. Any west coasters know of any rescues that may be in need?

I basically have everything, but can be more specific if need be.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here’s one idea:

Georgina Bloomberg’s charity, the Rider’s Closet, might be a good place to start.

You can also consider contacting local IHSA/IEA/Pony Club groups in your area to see if they could use anything. I know my IHSA team would love to get some gently used show clothes for new members to use, or for lending out when someone’s boot zipper bursts right before a show (not that THAT’S ever happened…)

or you could post a list of what you’ve got here and I’m sure we’d all take it off your hands pretty quickly. LOL.

But yes, I agree with 541. Georgina’s charity was just looking for a lot of riding clothes last week. They may still be taking donations. I have the address if you need it.

Perfect I sent her a PM to see what she might need/when her next fund raiser is!

Still would love ideas- I have so much stuff that I think I can donate to multiple causes.
Thanks so much for the ideas!

Ha! Well it might come down to that for remaining items. I’ll keep you posted

Would love the address to Georgina’s charity

Thanks!

The CANTER chapters can use donations of horsey stuff. I’m sure they can always use blankets, saddle pads, and that sort of thing.

Besides Georgina’s charity there are also many therapeutic riding programs that could probably use some stuff for the riders.

I have recently downsized and took many items to our local tack store that has a consignment shop, asked them to price and donate proceeds to two local horse charities. Seemed to work well for everyone.

What part of the country are you in?

Out here we have the Compton Posse that works with inner city youth in LA - I think they are great cause.

I think Philadelphia’s “work to ride” is another great program, works with inner city youth, and has a successful polo team!!

I donate my used items to “tack gives back” a local group that collects, and sells tack for non profits - our local beneficiary is a therapeutic riding center.

I’m in WA state (Eastern Washington). Originally from the Bay Area so I will look in to the Compton Posse.

I will contact CANTER to see if they need saddle pads, blankets, etc. I would also love a rescue that someone likes for blankets and other items. I seriously have so many blankets and such that I think I can easily split between a few places. (Used to live on a farm) I have everything from standing wraps, saddle pads, blankets, buckets, boots, etc, etc, that I think a rescue or an org like CANTER would benefit from.

Dewey, thank you for posting the St. Jude thread! We do the annual ride and silent auction and it all goes to the charity! We would LOVE any items, katiemayo! (I am a co-host :))

I sent equislover a PM. I love this!

Thanks, Katiemayo! If she doesn’t respond, please let me know. She’s not on here as much as I am. Or send me a PM.

I gave a bunch of stuff to CANTER and it was very much appreciated. Since you were from the Bay Area - CANTER California might work for you.

Donate clothes to IHSA teams!!! We’re ALWAYS in need of jackets and pants and boots for kids who can’t afford it. Contact some teams in your zone and see what they need!

Little Bits Therapeutic Riding Center in Woodinville, WA takes donations of clothes and tack (or they used to - I haven’t donated in awhile). They hold shows for their riders, and like to outfit them when possible.

It depends on the item. I have donated to the SPCA before.

Georgina Bloomburg runs Georginia’s Closet. The closet gives riding clothes to people who would like to show but can’t really afford the high cost of good show clothes. They give the clothes to people all over the country. I think you have to send in a story about you and a video but they do a wonderful thing for those who can benefit from it.

Me
In all seriousness, SAFE horse rescue in western Washington is great. They take in a lot of hopeless, emancipated horses and help them. They always need blankets, tack, etc. https://www.safehorses.org/

Since you are in WA, have you thought about Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center? They have some very specific items on their wish lists -
