Need some recommendations on hoof boots for my rescued old man

Hi everyone
I posted about hoof boots in Horse Care and someone wide and wonderful suggested I ask your group so here I am, kinda smacking myself on the head about it since you all would be THE group to ask about hoof boots
Here’s a bit of background on my old man:
I rescued him from some clueless owners a few months ago. He was a starvation case whose owners never called a vet except for shots. Their farrier diagnosed him as being insulin resistant and so the owners fed him very little. But my suspicions were confirmed by my vet, he is just severely malnutritioned and NOT IR.
And like most starvation/neglect cases, his feet are awful. They are now thankfully getting better due to better nutrition but as we all know, it takes a year to get a new full hoof.
When he came to me, he was in shoes with clips and pads, but according to my farrier, he was poorly shod and the pads were ill fit to his feet. He kept throwing shoes, most likely because it was a mud pit up here up until recently and with the bad condition of his feet, the shoes really just did not have a chance.
We took off his shoes and pads because it was literally every other week we were putting on shoes and he did have a mild case of thrush starting, so the new farrier thought it best to take off the shoes, treat the thrush, and allow his soles to harden up.
He has gotten much better barefoot but is still gravel sore. He has very little sole depth and IIRC, thin soles too. However, he is better with shoes on.
So we briefly discussed boots today and farrier thought it might be good idea since a.) he was throwing shoes regularly b.) I’m pregnant and can’t take off loose shoes thanks to the ever growing baby belly I have
Would you all please tell me about hoof boots? My experience is limited to just bell boots and medical/therapy boots. I need recommendations on which types to use, etc. and even a good place to buy them cheap  My goal is to just keep him comfortable while he grows out new hoof and gains weight. Occasionally the little nephews might hop on for a pony ride but he is not in any work other than swishing flies and rolling in the grass
Thanks everyone!

Crossapol is expensive and you have to use a lot of it, but it’s the best thing for hoof walls and soles. You will see results is about 4 months, but the results will be great. And I’ve used everything. I also recommend the soft ride boots, but they are expensive. You can check ebay for the soft rides, or go to the hoof boot exchange site where people sell all kinds of hoof boots. I’ve tried some of the other boots, but gave them all away. Soft-rides are the best for sore hooves.

Great of you to get the horse.

Thanks! I will check them out. How easy are they to get on/off? Im getting kinda baby bump challenged lol
