Please give me your best tips to catch a feral cat. I already have two barn cats set up with a self feeder and insulated nests (if they want and they seldom do)
It is not unusual to have a stray wander by and have an evening meal from the self feeder but this guy I am pretty sure is a drop off and once he found the feeder doesn’t go far.
I might not even mind feeding another one but there is still a turf war going on and he sprays.
So, now, my lovely barn area that usually smells of the heavenly mix of hay and horse now reeks of
territorial cat!
Ideas please!
Have-a-heart live trap? Do you have a Trap-Neuter-Spay group associated with a shelter? They would have a trap and best ideas.
Live trap or drop trap.
Live trap baited with a can of stinky fish cat food. What you do with him after capture is up to you. Local SPCA offers free gelding for captured feral stallion cats, and returns them to you to keep. One of our treasured house cats came to us this way. He’s a lovely cat. Started with us as a barn cat, and worked up the courage to come to the house in time. Loves all other cats, and sleeps in bed with me now.
Or you can drop him off at your local SPCA, and they will do the best they can for him.
First locate a TNR (trap neuter release) program near you that can help you with neutering once you have this boy trapped. Most of these assume you are going to take the cat back after it is neutered.
If you do not own a live trap (Have-a-heart or other brand) some of those programs will loan you a trap. Otherwise they are not that expensive to buy.
Set it up, kept open. And feed inside it (wide open) for a bit so he gets used to going into it.
Then the day before his appointment set it up to close when triggered with some extra yummy food.
If possible, lock your cats you do not want trapped somewhere else for that time span.
He can stay in the trap for hours waiting for his appointment. He will not be happy, but he will be fine.
Good tips thank you!
