Need tough covering for hoof with hospital plate

I’m looking for something that may not exist: a tough, wear-like-iron hoof slipper that will fit over a glue-on shoe and hospital plate. Needs to hold up to turn-out and mud.

Mare had hoof surgery couple weeks ago to clean out a abscess that worked its way into the coffin bone. Quarter-sized hole is healing nicely. We’re trying to keep the grit out of the screws, and prevent them from wearing down.

We had a slipper-type thing that worked great while she was confined to a small area, but now that she’s in a larger space and moving around better it didn’t hold up.

Any suggestions? TIA

Davis boot not right for that?

We had a horse with one of those and it seemed a very tought boot.

I’m not sure a Davis boot would stay on if the horse is very active. I use them frequently but not for turnout. Can you
buy or borrow one of the Easy Boots w/ multiple straps?

We used an Easy Boot before her surgery, when we thought we were dealing with a regular abscess. But now, with the shoe and plate, it doesn’t fit. Hm. Maybe I just need a larger one?

Look at the Easy Boot Rx and see if it fits the bill.

I had a very active horse turned out in one for 2 weeks, mud and all (and we have soul-sucking (no misspelling!) red clay), with a bandaged foot to protect a big hole in the back of his frog from shoving a stick up it, and subsequently having most of his frog cut away

So probably Gorilla Duct tape isn’t feasible? That stuff is pretty durable.

Eeek, JB, hope the horse recovered!

I had really good luck using my Soft Ride and Easy Boot Rx boots for a similar purpose. Although, they were completely destroyed in doing so long term.

Last time I had a horse with a hospital plate vet advised using silicone caulking to the screws and around the edges. You just peel it off and re-apply when needed. Let dry in a clean area for 30 minutes. Kept it nice and clean.

Brilliant idea! thanks.

Try the woof wear boot at stateline tack.

^^^Thats what I would do — try to get an Easy Boot in a bigger size. I’m wondering, if it might be better to also put a boot on the opposite hoof to keep her balanced?

This is what I would do, as well.

I bought a larger size soft ride boot to go over a special shoe. You can buy one only, don’t have to buy in pairs. I balanced the other hoof with one of a pair of soft rides in the normal size for this horse.

I want to buy a pair of the woof wear boots to put over the bandages and shoe, but haven’t decided what size to try.
