Need video or good directions on how to do up a western girth, please. (I just can’t use the word “cinch” yet.)
Also, do they make any with an elastic (stretch) component for the horse?
Tx.

I love my smart cinch. Not elastic, but it has little rollies to make tightening easier. I think the fender that needs repaired and put back on my one saddle is on that side so I could probably make you a video of how I do it, but there’s a couple different ways.
not really ideal (the buckle is meant to go through the holes in the latigo for a reason, they just sometimes don’t always line up…how I have that issue on the same horse one day to the next is beyond me, I know I’m doing something wrong…) but here’s a video…

ah the youtube-verse of experts.
Thanks, EI ! I can’t watch them now but I surely will later.
and here’s a pic, while tiny, of a smart cinch http://www.tackranch.com/SmartCinchDemo2.jpg
I love it. The latigo adjusts easier when it’s only sliding against itself on the D ring and the little rollies make it soooo much easier all around.
Assuming you are not tying the knot, and are using the buckle, (I know you know this) ALWAYS always do the front cinch first (and undo it last) and do not crank down on the rear cinch (can work like a buckstrap!).
This is a pretty good video (I don’t do the stretches but think thats a good idea!) on cinching up a horse with the buckle.
Here’s a pretty basic vid on tying the latigo

basically running the latigo through the D ring on the saddle, taking it across itself and tucking the end backup on the other side of the D ring. Then you can just pull it through adn tighten it (the video shows this). Once you do it, it will become very obvious, and is easy to tighten!
sorry, here’s the video of the basic cinching with the buckle!
Kind of hard to describe, but after I get the cinch the right tightness, I also like to pull out the top layer of the latigo just a bit to make sure the tongue on the buckle is tight and up against the leather. That way the latigo can’t slip off the buckle tongue and work loose.

This video was driving me crazy. He needed to get that horse out of his business and keep him out…the first time. Not an ideal demo video, IMO.

Always do the girth first, never last like this guy did. One good shake and that saddle is strapped to the side of that horse by the breast collar and the rear cinch.
Oh agree about always doing main cinch first and undoing last, I think I said that, but compared to lot of videos, you can actually see the mechanics of what the guy is doing with the cinch. And he’s right about laying it flat.
Butterfly is pretty easy to tie. After your second wrap of the latigo, bring the free end of the latigo around and put it back through the top ring, then insert the end through the loop created and snug it down, then bring the free end back up through the keeper under the swell. Do up the back cinch last as stated before and bring it snug, not tight to the belly, don’t let it swing loose as stuff, including a back foot, can get caught in there and cause a real wreck.
Damn!!! I hadda think hard to put that into words - second nature to me.
Um, I’m not loving this western way of girthing.
Too much wrapping (up, down, around 3 times then over there, eesh - what is the need for all that leather and complication) and then certainly not enough elastic.
Sublime equine kindly found me this on the other thread:
Or if you prefer double elastic…
I’m going to have to add my vote for the smart cinch. I LOVELOVELOVE mine, and my cranky girthy sensitive TB mare loves it too. I have the felt lined one.
Here is a link with some pictures and instructions on how to tie/buckle the girth

my connection ate my post - trying again. If you have a latigo with a smooth side and a rough side, the smooth side goes next to the horse and the rough side wraps around the dee and buckle, correct? I’ve always assumed so, but some latigo-buckle combos try to convince me otherwise!
And if you butterfly tie, esp. with a string cinch, what do you do with the buckle tongue? I have a nice mohair pony cinch but the tongue is long and doesn’t like to lay flat back against the cinch. Do you just let use squash it down, do you try to tie it back against the strings, ?? I have a cotton cinch with much better thought out buckles but the pony might prefer the mohair.
If only Sara Stetner had a video in saddling up the western horse…
a few different ways to tie off the lattigo…
