My neighbor, who has horses, lets her two large dogs roam (one is a bully mix of some sort). We each have 6 acre farmettes. My riding arena is about 12’ from our property line. I have 3 board fence (not dog proof) bordering my property – NOT a shared fence line. Her dogs regularly chase my horses, both when I’m working them in the ring and when they’re turned out… its only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. I have a home based business and the dogs come charging across my property at my clients. They also frequently use my property as their personal toilet, and I’m tired of cleaning up after them. I’ve talked to my neighbors numerous times, and while they now keep close tabs on their dogs when I’m outside, I know they’re still loose a lot (I have security cameras and find evidence of their visits). My county has a leash law, waste clean up law, nuisance law, and several others that they’re breaking. I’m trying hard to be a nice neighbor and not go to the county, but I’m at my wits end. They’ve been giving me the cold shoulder ever since I spoke up, and instantly complained that my arena was running off on to their property. WWYD? I hate uncomfortable situations, but I’m pretty fed up with their dogs and attitude.
The best thing to do IMO is to attach wire mesh fencing on ‘their’ side of your 3 board fence making it dog proof – you can even use plastic deer fencing which is pretty darn strong. An expense on your part of course – but when neighbors don’t respond to your justified complaints (believe me I’ve been there) you sometimes have to take matters into your own hands and solve the problem yourself.
I recently put up a long line of horse fence on a section of my property (where my back yard meets my neighbors back yard) and am going to dog proof it – from ground up to middle board with heavy duty deer mesh. They got a big pit bull mix last year that is often loose in their yard (under their supervision so far) but it has been eyeballing and barking at me, my cats, my horses and my small dogs. It’s only a matter of time…
And since I’ve had problems with these neighbors before (different issue) I’m just going to solve the impending dog problem myself.
My concern about putting up mesh fencing is that i can’t fence my entire perimeter with it. My luck, they’ll go around it and end up getting stuck on my property.
Years ago, the way I resolved the neighbor dogs chasing my horses was to train them myself. We are pretty far out in farm country but these neighbors didn’t farm. They did have 18 acres their Lab and Weimaraner didn’t think was enough and their owners refused to confine them to a smaller area (a big back yard would have worked).
So I trained the dogs myself and tough s*** if the owners had an issue with it. “My farm and barn, my rules”. Those dogs were SMART - very smart and willing. It didn’t take long before those two stopped chasing the horses and would sit respectfully in the barn (with my big dogs) when it was feeding time. they were great dogs with a little training.
Ten years later, those two old girls ended up living with me until their end times because their people moved to town and either couldn’t or wouldn’t take them ---- they were going to take the old girls to the dog pound, where they surely would have ended up in the gas chamber.
So that’s another option ------ train your neighbor’s dogs yourself and if your neighbor doesn’t like it, "tough s*** or keep them at home:)
I know – – I thought of that after I posted. Dogs can be tenacious.
Get a Bigger Dog, we had a 140 pound 1/4 wolf German Shepard Dog for many years, nothing came into the pastures as this place was his kingdom.
He was a true rescue, was five years old when we got him… the day I got him here he took one loop around the fence lines then came to set at my feet… from that point on everything inside the fences was under his watchful eye
He never barked but could just look at something and scare it to death
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
I had this problem at my previous farm, talked and talked to the dog owners, they did nothing.
i got a BB gun, it only took hitting them once, then all they had to do was see me with the gun and they would take off running.
After a while they just stayed away.
I love dogs but I love my horses more!
Can you run a string of electric around the perimeter?
reminds me of when we had problems with wild dogs at my parents farm on the Ohio River, I drove a steel stake into the ground then put very large hunk of meat over the steel stake then wrapped the steak in place with metal electric fence wire… hooked the fence charger to the lead.
That night pack of dogs returned attempting to eat the meat… you could hear the howling for at least a mile as they left never to return
Paint balls work too, and your neighbors will definitely see the results. Electric mounted on the outside of the fence with the long insulators and placed in the space between the boards would probably do the job. Bare aluminum wire really conducts a zap.
That makes me think of a story my dad told - When he and my mom were first married, there was a dog that would go asround the neighborhood, and it would always pee on their front door. After a few failed attempts to chase him away or otherwise make him stop, my dad hooked up the copper screening to house current. When he saw the dog, he flipped the switch, and sure enough the dog came up and peed.
He said you never heard such a screetching noise!
And, for the rest of its life, it never set paw on the property, and would always stop and give the house a dirty look before it moved on.
Let the law handle it. I understand your wanting to keep things civil but your neighbors don’t want that. They want everything their way, and (bleep) you.
Your neighbor is a classic bully. The more you turn the other cheek the worse it will get. You will never be great friends, a stalemate is the best you can hope for.
The neighbor also seem to feel ‘tit for tat’ is fair as demonstrated by their complaint about the water run-off when you complained about the dogs. They might go after your horses if you harass their dogs.
There are laws in place where you live for just this reason.
I would save all security footage of their dogs on your property, post ‘No Stray Dogs Allowed’ on the fence, and send a registered letter to the neighbors stating the next time their dogs cross onto your property you will go to the authorities.
Then follow thru.
Having them give you the cold shoulder, and keep the dogs home, sound like a win/win.
Look into planting a fast-growing, thorny, thick, hedge on your side of the property line. Tell neighbor it will soak up most of the run-off.
Good grief, call Animal Control! You have rules, laws in place, but if you never call AC they won’t be enforced. You have been nice, not much change. You don’t want to get bit or have customers endangered!! Start calling AC when dogs are loose, harassing you and your animals. If you can easily catch one dog, have AC pick it up. Just don’t put yourself in danger catching it. Read the othe posts on nuisance dogs, it just never ends well without officials intervening. Bad owners don’t change unless it is forced on them.
Be a doormat and get walked on or react to regain the private use of your property.
BB’s can penetrate a dog’s skin and lodge in the animal. Not a humane outcome. Plus, if the neighbor figures out who shot the dog, charges can be filed. Not a good idea in my book.
I wish things were that simple. Our AC is completely non-responsive. We called them three times for the same dog in the space of a few weeks. Crickets. No one answered the telephone. No one called us back. We repeatedly brought the dog back to the neighbors, 1/4 of a mile away, but they barely acknowledged the situation.
I really understand about not wanting conflict .I also have neighbors who told me “get off my property” when i wanted to speak with them about their garbage ending up all over my property. Yep some neighbors are just awful.
As to the dogs the easiest solution (if you like dogs) is have 2 big ones of your own. dogs do respect other dogs territory.
I had trouble with neighborhood dogs packing up, chasing deer and killing cats. solved easily by having two nice Chesapeake retrievers and currently have pair of Rhodesians Ridgebacks. I can’t imagine not having dogs, they keep the deer away from my shrubs, the cats safe and no dog comes into our property though our perimeter is fenced so I think that helps.
I keep my dogs inside the 10 acres using “underground” fence only I only bury it under the gates and the rest is carefully tacked to bottom of horse fence post. No need to bury to just be carful if you weed wack. Its real cheap if you install it yourself.
Also a bottom string of electric fenced turned up high will deter most animals.
I’m to concerned with people acting violent to want to piss off my neighbors by calling police or animal control. People are just to aggressive these days…
It is probably time to call the Police/Sheriff and file a complaint if there is a leash law. They are breaking it=breaking the law. You tried to reason with them, they ignored you. AC is not the way to go, needs to be law enforcement. When they get a ticket and have to go to court, they will change their tune.
How about running electric lines in the spaces between boards? Cheaper than wire mesh.
But, I’d be calling the county too. If they’re a nuisance to you, they’re likely a nuisance to other neighbors also.
