Neosporin Ophthalmic Ointment substitute

I did a search on here re: Neosporin and see that it has been unavailable (thread was from 2013). I would love to know what products are available and are any of them non-prescription ointments? What are you using for minor eye irritations.

Thanks in advance.

I use plain old Neosporin, vet said steer clear of the neosporin + pain relief and just use the original. Works great!

My vet has switched to the terramycin ointment.

I’ve been using Terramycin for years!

Kind of curious why you (or anyone) would want to treat your horse with an ophthalmic antibiotic without your vet’s guidance?

I use a prescription, either erythromycin, sulfa or cipro. The cipro works fantastic for corneal ulcers. My pony got a terrible one this spring and several other treatments weren’t working until she was switched to cipro.
Even though I’m a doctor,I still get all eye issues checked out ASAP, emergency! Eyes can go south so quickly and there’s no getting back a lost eye.

Thanks everyone for all your replies. Greatly appreciated!

For a slightly drippy eye, I will start with Terramycin, and put a call in to the vet. It helps soothe the eye, and doesn’t cause any damage (there is no steroid in it). And with some horses with a history of something, it is nice to have it on hand. I do agree, with eyes, I generally contact my vet too!
