So I am building a hobby farm. Currently working on the barn but I have my dry paddock in place. The issue I am having is with hay mess/ waste. I have a slow feed net on the hay and the hay is in a feeder which is similar to tombstone. It has 3 feet though and so there is a 6 inch or so gap under it. It has so pan. So the horses pull hay from the net and drop it around the bale and it gathers at the edges inside the feeder. For the most part it stays in there but there is so much wasted getting wet. I was looking and wondering if I product exists like a net that clips to the feeder that you put in before the bale. I have 2 pallets in the feeder so if I were to have a net ontop of the pallets attached to the sides of the feeder at the bottom, and then put in my bale with its net on… the dropped hay wouldn’t go on the ground (much anyways) and they could eat it when the bale runs low.
maybe I am over thinking this, but does anyone else have this issue and a resolution? Other than a new feeder with a pan? I just got this one 1 month ago. Though I suppose I will need another for my pastures anyways.
Do you have a picture of the feeder? I’m trying to visualize the issue.
trubandloki, yep you are right. That is exactly the issue I am having. It wasnt too bad with the last bale I got from a different guy but this bale is much much looser rolled. This bale is way better hay though so even though the last one had almost no waste I want to stick with this more wasteful hay. There is a lot a lot of waste on this one. I was thinking of getting the net that goes on a ring around the top of the feeder that you use instead of the bag style…and installing it at the bottom. Its pricey but if they dont ruin it it can be used for it’s true purpose in the future if needed. Not sure about how baggy it will be, might be a safety issue for pawing.
