Neule Schule Turtle Top bits in 12mm mouthpiece?

I have the Turtle Top in 14mm - my mare goes okay in it but is fussy in the mouth in general (and always has been; she’s my homebred and I put a bit in her mouth as a yearling just so she could wear it and become accustomed to it - same at 2 and 3 - but she has always had a fussy mouth no matter what bit I try; it’s just who she is - and she’s extremely “oral” in general.)

Recently I lent my NS TT to a student, so have been using my Bevel bit without the ring leverage - it’s my jumping bit - and I put the reins on the main ring and sometimes on the leverage ring. The mouthpiece is a simple French link (not legal anymore, Oy!), but it’s thinner: 12 mm.

Ms Fuss has a VERY small mouth; thick tongue, low palate. She seems to be less fussy in the Bevel bit for flatwork, so I’m thinking that maybe I could try an NS with a thinner mouthpiece? Have been googling around and they seem to be available on Ebay - though not sure whether I trust the sellers. The major tack shops seem to only have the NS Verbindend in the thinner mouthpiece - but BTDT with her and though it worked well initially, she eventually started to hang on it. Go figure, since it’s supposed to help with that (mare is downhill and VERY long in the back and neck, short front legs so this is a regular challenge for her.)

Mary’s tack (which has a bit rental program - I have actually taken advantage of this in the past) has lots of NS loose ring bradoons but I didn’t see any with 12mm mouthpieces.

If anyone knows where I could find one of these unicorn bits I would very much appreciate it, TIA!

Not answering your direct question but I found my boy very fussy in a turtle top and was a lot better in a KK Ultra, so perhaps you do need to consider it’s the type of lozenge that she prefers rather than thinner bars.

Answering your direct question: I’ve checked the UK websites and there’s nothing that states the size of the bars on the bradoon, only the size of the rings. It might be best if you ring or email NS to see if such a thing exists before wasting your time on a fruitless search.

My mare hates, HATES the Turtle top lozenge, or any other substantial-esque lozenge. Agree with Nous to make sure you know what’s making her happy in the jumping bit.

Thanks! Tried the KK ultra quite a while ago – she tended to hang on it – she is very persnickety :smirk:

I guess I could email them - better than trying to call them in the UK - or do they have a number in the States? It’s a little unclear from the link you gave me.

Well, it’s a regular French Link mouthpiece - but that’s no longer legal for eventing dressage.

Right, but it could be the smaller lozenge that she likes, not the thinner mouthpiece.

And… isn’t that just for FEI? Or is it non-FEI now, too?

Possibly – though I’ve tried similar bits in the past, and there was no real difference.

Well, eventing dressage rules forbid it; this is relatively recent - 3 or 4 years ago?

Not according to this:

I’m confused, I thought for sure B-rings and Dr. Bristols were illegal, but there they are with a green check. Hopefully someone who knows for sure-for sure chimes in…

That is from a year ago, so maybe it’s more recent than that?

It’s the same one as the link here:

Those are the UK contact details.

They have a facebook page, you could try to message them

Ordered the 12mm mouthpiece from here previously on an eggbutt.

That’s FEI. Are you showing FEI?

From the article: " It’s important, too, to note that these rules are for FEI eventing competitions ."

If true then no, those days are behind me (LOL), but I would need to clarify to make sure - and @Jealoushe - thanks! Very helpful

Canadian eventing rules follow the FEI regs.

US eventing does not.

We follow those rules in the absence of our own rules. So there could be different rules for Canada and FEI.
