I would step back and do some slow work in a less harsh bit. I would not have that one in my barn to tell the truth. There are a few gag type bits out there that are actually pretty soft in the right hands. Used one on a horse for years simply because he liked to play with his bit so much, it kept happy, was not for stopping power.
Stop doing patterns and circle, circle, circle. Lope down, stop, back, roll back, wash, rinse, repeat. Speed is worthless without breaks and control. Sometimes slower is faster on the clock because there are no down barrels or super wide turns.
Look for some clinics, I know there is usually one or two each year in Perry or the place just south of there, will come to me right after I hit post I am sure
