New cat wants to mount my dog

Hey All! Been awhile. So-I recently rescued a cat from the local shelter. History is unclear as the other two shelters he’d been in said he was 2 but this local shelter vet thought, by his teeth, he was 12. I think he’s two, given the kitten-like rambunctiousness. I renamed him Banjo. He’s tons of fun and bonded with my King Charles Cavalier Spaniel named Jade right away-they are about the same size. If anything, Banjo is a bit bigger! According to his papers he was neutered sometime within a few years back.

A few times now in the evening when I am on my recliner, Jade on the footrest, Banjo on my lap-he looks at Jade laying there and slowly, very slowly, MOUNTS HER-front legs gently but firmly around her neck- and starts to hump her. Again, so slowly she doesn’t even wake up for a bit, then she’ll look at him, me, and just move onto the floor.

The first time this happened I was pretty weirded out- but it was so odd it was a little funny. Now I’m just discouraging him.

My question is- is this kinda like a ‘proud cut’ gelding? Something I should talk to a vet about? Or just keep discouraging the behavior? That I’ll do no matter. What think?

This wouldn’t really bother me at all, as long as the dog isn’t bothered, and I would think it was funny. But it sounds like a dominance behavior to me.

I also recently adopted a big neutered male cat named Bob, and while he doesn’t hump the dogs, he does the same thing you’re describing to my senior cat, Peach.

Peach is not amused by this, so I squirt Bob when I hear Peach yelling at him to get off of her.
