"new" EPM study ....

“Pathogenes Inc” in Florida, has been working on a new approach on curing EPM, by analyzing/treating 2 separate symptoms: parasites and inflammation, on a deeper level than Marquis. They suggest a different drug combination and are in the final stages of being approved by the FDA. Trial horses had a much higher probability to be cured and show to not relapse.

Has anyone on here been part of this trial, or does anyone know more about this study? I think the Vets name is Siobhan Allison DVM PHD??

Thanks for sharing

I don’t know if it’s the same drug(s) you are referencing but a friend of mine just had her horse treated for EPM with what she described as a “new” drug rather than Marquis. The vet told her the new approach worked better and faster and was expected to have fewer side effects.

Her horse did very well on that protocol and seemed to tolerate the treatment very easily.

Do you know what the new drug is? I’m currently going through a second round of Marquis treatment, supplemented with weekly Zylexis injections, on my gelding.

Just got the name back from her: Oroquin 10

Good luck with the treatment… EPM is a crummy disease!

Here we go again. This Oroquin stuff is getting tedious. BTW, EPM is a protozoa not a parasite.

Wow. That’s pretty obnoxious. I didn’t read the paper or research it; my friend’s horse was recently treated - apparently successfully - with this medication after being diagnosed with EPM. We happen to use the same pretty well regarded vet, so I’d certainly feel comfortable sharing the information he provided, and the horse is doing very well now. Take it for whatever it’s worth.

A quick Google search seems to indicate that there are quite a few vets offering this as a treatment for EPM, presumably because they have had some success with it since the clinical trials that appear to have been done in 2011.

There have been countless newbies coming on this forum singing the praises of how well this stuff works for them under the razor thin veil of advertising. THAT is what is getting old. Use whatever you want, glad it worked for your friend.

My friend works in customer service and I run a (human) medical group. Quite sure that neither of us would be advertising a veterinary medication. A 20 second Google search seems to indicate that there are qualified veterinarians out there using it as well… (ex. http://www.ecequine.com/EPM.html, randomly chosen from the list that came up in a search) and from what my friend tells me… this treatment is significantly less costly than Marquis, which is the treatment I was familiar with.

Maybe if “countless people” have been reporting success with this medication, it works as advertised. I’ve never had reason to use it myself, thankfully. Not sure why it seems to offend you so.

A quick use of the search feature here instead of google will likely illustrate the exasperation. Especially in the Horse Care forum.

One of the vets in our area has been using it with very high success rates.

Lucassb has over 10,000 replies, hardly a newbie.

More than one vet practice in my area, including mine, has begun using the Oroquin 10 treatment for EPM. I was just discussing this with my vet yesterday and he said in his practice (large, 8-vet, equine-only practice) they are seeing excellent results, better than with Marquis.

Yes I have 2 horses that went through it. The treatment that is. One was treated with Marquis over 3 years ago and retired. Guess what, he is now started back to work and has been ridden twice this week. So excited and happy to be back on him and the other horse is doing great also.

I was referring to the newbie who started this thread just like the countless other threads on this subject. There seems to be a never ending supply of people who sign up solely to share this product. Often getting feedback from other newbies. Shocker. Spend the cash and buy an ad if the stuff is so great, don’t steal bandwith.

Well I’m not a newbie and i always respond to these post. Reason being because after going through the 3 months of Marquis at 800 a month then 6 months of the epm cocktail my horse really got no better but didn’t progress and had to be retired because of balance issues and tripping issues. 10 days of this treatment and 14 days of a drug the use for encephalitis my horse is balanced in his backend, not tripping and stopped dropping his feed and is now being ridden 3 years after retiring him and 3 months after the new treatment. If it wasn’t for the numerous post on this board I saw about this new treatment my horse would still be retired and miserable tripping around in the pasture. He is bright and happy now and it’s so worth it. I thank the people on this board from bringing it to my attention and I’ve been on here about 7 years now.

A horse I sold a year ago was subsequently diagnosed with EPM, was treated with it and is in the study. I havent seen him since then but I am told he is 100% recovered.

Not sure who you think you are, or why you think you can take the liberty to judge a “newbie” and assume I am sharing someone’s product.
I am not on here every day nor am I on here every week, I do have a full time job, so I most definitely do not know what has been previously posted, nor do I care.
All I am doing is helping a non computer literate friend collect feedback about this drug to assist a sick horse. That is what this forum is for. Unless you have constructive advice to share in regards to the drug mentioned, move on to another thread. Thank you kindly.

One thing the newcomers will find is cynicism and rancor from some of the oldtimers, do not let it get you down. I had not seen the multitude of other postings so glad that I did finally see it thanks to someone who decided to post for whatever reason, and very glad to hear that this is working better than Marquis. I worked in a vet clinic in the early 2000 period when it first came out, and when EPM was such a horrifying disease, I will never forget the calls from desperate owners whose horses were down and dying from they knew not what. I imagine the mods could roll them all into one if it were a real problem that “all of these posts” are utilizing unnecessary bandwith. Carry on!

There have been NUMEROUS, often highly contentious threads about Oroquin.

I would suggest you read them for more information about both “sides” in the debate.

If you have something to add (and FDA approval would definitely be something to add), I would suggest adding it to one of the existing threads.

If you start a new thread, it will probably rehash through the conflcting opinions, all over again, without adding anything new.

On one side are people who are enthusiastic about it. If YOUR horse improved from the treatment, you are sure to be enthusiastic.

On the other side are people (often in the medical or scientific fields) who point out that anecdotal evidence is not real proof, that proper scientfic (controlled) studies have not been conducted, that in many cases the horses treated my not actually have EPM in the first place, and that Oroquin is in a class of drugs that can have VERY serious side effects.

Personally, I would rather not live through it again.

It makes much more sense to read the existing threads, and add you opinions, and anything new, there.
