New farm, let's build some stuff

I’m thinking that with 16" OC studs, unless it’s HEAVY heavy, I won’t have to worry about where anything goes anyhow. The T&G does look and stay super nice though, no warping. I’ll have to price out the difference.

I have the loft for bulk storage, so I won’t need anything too crazy in the tack room for organization (I think?). Mostly the saddles (4 technically, I got gifted one that I don’t know what to do with but never ride in it because it’s too narrow for modern horses), bridles (I have quite a few), and saddle pads. Maybe somewhere for a stack of rags and basic leather cleaning stuff. Girths I plan to hang in the grooming area, and I’ll have one or two pad racks somewhere for sweaty pads. Trying to keep “stinky” or sweaty stuff out of the tack room.

That has…ah…not been my experience.

That loft is 40x10, I already have a vast majority of my horse stuff up there, and don’t even have it 1/4 full. What’s at the boarding barn only takes a small corner. I honestly think I’ll be ok, but you’re probably right!

I have 1/4 of a 48x34 loft full of stuff, and the tack room still needs more storage.

It’s not about total amount of stuff, but total amount of stuff that you use often enough that you don’t want to hike upstairs for it.

I think I’m a low-key minimalistic horse keeper. I don’t use too much stuff on the daily ritual. Once a week i do a deep clean on the horses, but otherwise it’s a knock-the-dirt-off, let’s ride type brushing.

Yeah, with horses at home, it’s a lot more stuff than just grooming and tack.

But you’ll find out! It’s a lot! A surprising amount! :joy:

I mean, I have everything medicinally that I need in my tack locker at the barn. The only thing I segregate is “hoof ailment” stuff, which is in one tote. In that tote are two soaking boots, diapers, etc - everything for an abcess. I have muck buckets and forks and shovels and brooms.

It still doesn’t seem like a colossal storage need. What’s going to take the most room is hay, and I’m building a dedicated area for that, 14x30.

Give it a year, and you’ll laugh at this post

It’s the difference between living in a hotel, and having a house.

We shall see! I’ve gone from full care, partial care, to self care - all with this same kit, same tack box, same everything. I tend to find stuff I like and then just stick with it.

Storing all my jumps will be a different story though!

I would love to see how you end up doing that. I am in need of jump storage ideas. Please put it on your list of things to post about later.

My barn owner made a very easy and cheap “storage”. Maybe I can post pictures?

Yes please!!

Just plinking away at insulation. I’ll run out of material before I’m done.

What’s your R factor on the boards?

It’s 15 or so? Not great but I didn’t want fiberglass/rolls in case the mice get in there. Don’t want them too comfy! Better r factor was WAY more expensive and I have my limits. It is a tack room, after all!

That’s fine for the walls. After all, the air space and whatever you use for the interior all add up, and you’ll wind up around 17.5 or so. Are you going to foam the joints? If you are going to heat it, I’d throw something a bit more serious into the ceiling.

Looking good!

I might foam them, but I’m not sure. I don’t want it too air tight, because it’s inevitably going to get some moisture and I don’t want mold.

The door itself is an el-cheapo interior door, so that’s going to leach a lot of air and heat.

If I can keep the thing heated at 35-40 degrees without it costing me a fortune, I’d be tickled pink.

Ran out of insulation, so took out the rat runs in the loft and replaced them with some knees. Also, put in the back to the shelf with some leftover wallboard I had. I’m going to have to do some thinking on how to finish this wall.

There’s a knot in one of the pieces of wood that looks like an effed up Persian cat to me,and it drives me a little nuts.

I mean backpfeifengesicht is my favorite German word and it isn’t that common and is definitely not an AE word…

But also I kind of suspect that schlep came into American English by way of Yiddish, rather than German and there are more than a few other words that are similar. Basically if you are an American of a certain age and can imagine or remember Mike Myers saying a word during a SNL ‘Coffee Talk’ sketch, it probably came into American English via Yiddish. But also there is some overlap and a lot of similarities between Yiddish and German, so…
