Don’t panic. It sounds like you have a high rate of attrition on your farm. Spay and neuter who ever is left at 6 months. Within a few years, you may be looking for replacement cats. I was in a similar situation 25 years ago with 13 kittens born one summer. Gave some away, lost some to early kitten failure to thrive and altered the rest. Within a few years I was looking for kittens. Just try not to get attached.
Yay! You did great!
You’ve just reminded me of back in 1989 when I was working/living at a conference/retreat center and the manager’s family had just gotten a new kitten. They named him Ewok.
The local pound and rescues are begging for fosters for kittens, but I have a small house (with 3 dogs, 2 cats) and not a separate room I can put them in. It breaks my heart I can’t help.
I found a TNR rescue in the nearby big city! They will fix barn cats for free! We drop them off for surgery and pick them up the next day. I’m going to trap the last (hopefully male) free roaming barn cat and get him done first. Completely worth the drive. I’m so relieved! Our expenses with litter and food are manageable. All we have to worry about are homes for kittens. Whew! $60 per was getting a bit rich, so this is great.
That is amazing news @moonlitoaksranch! Good find.
Neuter everyone you see/catch and that will keep the colony from growing and all of them much happier.
I am thrilled for you! Drop me a PM and I’m in for a dribble.
Such a good idea. If @moonlitoaksranch gives the name of the rescue that is a great place to donate.
No worries, my friend. We got this. But, thank you very much. I’ll make sure we keep the picture updates coming.
I’ll PM you.
We’ll try to find good homes for kittens. Maybe even see if a rescue can screen adopters for us. They can collect the fee. These four are street smart, so if we get them fixed and provide an indoor overnight safe place, maybe they’ll stick around.
@Brown_Derby, if you send me a PM I can forward the rescue information to you. I tried to send you a PM but I could not.
Yes, to the rescue I wish to contribute. OP is rich in other ways!
Definitely rich in kittens. And cat litter. And toe beans!
Yay! That is wonderful!
I’m so glad you found an agency to help! Wonderful news!
If anyone is looking for a very helpful rescue to donate to I understand this one is very helpful and is going above and beyond.
That is awesome!!! I am so happy for you. Free is the best.
Can I send the semi-feral momma I trapped and her 4 kittens…? I just heard back from my vet clinic, they want to charge me full-cost for spay for all 5… Quoted at about $635 per cat…
My word for Original Owner only has 4 letters
@moonlitoaksranch your report of the convo re: “They’re all yours now” made my hair stand on end.
What an A$$!
If I read your location it’s gone from my mind now
But if your anywhere near NW IN, put me down for 2 kittens
The mice in my barn have gone without a Verminator for too long.
I fear for my saddle.
A friend did the same.
Had Mom & 5 kittens in the cage.
She had 2 other longtime (neutered) barncats when pregnant feral showed up.
She still has 2 of the kittens, Mom adiosed once they were weaned & before she could be spayed.
