New “Forage Only” Complete Feed

I’m sad to report mine don’t like it at all… beer pulp and alfalfa pellets it is.

It’s flax oil, not whole flax, but the oil itself can make soaked things a little sticky. I’ve noticed that too, so a small degree, it helps to add a bit more water

You either got the last of a batch, or it was just thrown around and squished a lot between bagging and reaching you. I’ve found the company to be pretty good to work with

@JB do you have any insight on how much flax the Forage Only provides? He gets about 3 pounds in his auto feeder and he is still on the Custom Equine Nutrition Omega E which is ground flax + vitamin e. I have a months worth or so left but I’d be open to removing that if the FO pellets would suffice on the flax end and get a stand-alone vitamin E supplement.

That is what I figured.

I am not the type to complain and expect something. This is usable. Just a little added work. If I kept having this problem I might say something to the company so they would know it is happening.

It’s only 4% fat, and beep and alfalfa have a little fat too, so it can’t be much

Thats what I figured. Ok, thanks! I think we will stick with old reliable!

Oh, their website has some info - about 2mg of Omega 3 per 100gm, so 0.02% Omega 3. And the Omega 6 is < half that

I’m finding I have to add a lot of water and it soaks up very quickly into a pretty sticky blob (I blame this somewhat on Omega Horseshine though…when I fed alf/tim pellets I got the same consistency). After it’s soaked, I add more water and then a glug of oil. It looks like a bucket of cow-pie manure (lovely). I dump it over some chopped alfalfa and mix it up good. Horse still likes it. Tonight I watched him and after he’d licked his feed pan clean he was biting the bottom of it like he was trying to scrape up every bit of the essence of this stuff.

I’ve been feeding this for not quite a month. I’m still mixing it with timothy pellets (about half and half) as that’s what my horses were getting before. All of my beasties love it and are scarfing it down.

My local Tractor Supply doesn’t carry it, so I’ve been ordering it online and having it shipped directly to me at no charge, as long as I don’t order more than three bags. The first two orders were shipped to my door in just 3-4 days, even with the Christmas shipping craziness, but the last order is now looking at a ten-day turnaround for shipping. Which kinda sucks since my current supply won’t last until then. I hope that it’s available in-store soon so I don’t have to worry about shipping.

And now Tractor Supply has ended their free shipping promo, so I guess I need to make a trip into the store and arrange for a regular supply to be shipped there for pickup. Grumble grumble.

Yeah. As much as I like the feed (and horse seems to like it too), the one drawback is being able to get it reliably. It seems to last a long time for my guy as he’s still working on the first bag and I have the second still in the trunk of my car unopened. But I’m much happier just going down to the feed store and picking up a couple of bags of something that is always in stock. I wish TSC would just go ahead and stock it.

I haven’t decided if I’ll stick with it beyond the second bag or not. We’ll see.

I will say this. It soaks super fast and my dude has certainly maintained his weight, possibly even gained a little. He looks great.

Let us know how it goes getting them to stock it.

I doubt I can get them to stock it at mine since I will not be using that much and I am certainly not paying shipping for it.
Is there shipping for delivery to store too? It seems like that should be free if they offer it and do not have it in the store.

Looks like no shipping when picked up in store. I also won’t need it for a while but it’s good to know:

This was posted on the unbeetable feed Facebook page on how to order it through Tractor Supply without incurring shipping costs. I’m going to go by my local store tomorrow and see if this works.

I’m very happy with the feed. My 28 yo pony has put on weight and his chronic diarrhea has disappeared. My 4-yr-old is noticeably quieter. And my two somewhat picky eaters are gobbling it down. So it’s worth a little extra effort if I can get it in stock.

Yeah, I love the feed and just put my second bag (out of two) into the feed bin yesterday. I just don’t know if I want to continue with the hassle of getting it. There’s shipping now when I try to buy online, and that makes it cost too much, IMO. I mean, it’s alfalfa, beet pulp, and flaxseed oil. He already eats a lot of ground flax (Omega Horseshine) and alfalfa (Standlee chopped), plus both of those are in his ration balancer (TC Gold balancer).

Sigh. I’m yearning for simplicity. We may be returning to good ol’ TC Senior (original). I had stopped it when worried that soy might be impacting him negatively, but I’m thinking that it wasn’t soy. He’s eaten soy for the majority of his life with no huge issues.

We’ll see.

Went to TSC today and turns out, at least at mine, if you order from their computer kiosk in the store, they take the shipping costs off. A little bit of a pain, but not too bad!

This is how my store works as well, but I have had others tell me in other threads that their store doesn’t have that option. Definitely nice for me though, since my local TSC is often out of stock of the grain I buy when I have time to run by the store, so I just order from their kiosk while I’m there!

Hmm, I’ve been ordering online (just placed another order for 3 bags yesterday) and the shipping is still free for me.

I also noticed something yesterday and meant to come back and post here about it. I have a TB gelding who is a very dedicated cribber. He lives in a cribbing collar, otherwise he gas colics and lands himself in the horsepital. Yesterday morning I took off his collar to give him a break from it and I forgot to put it back on after morning chores. Usually he doesn’t let me forget because after he eats he’s sucking wind on the nearest available object and it’s nails on a chalkboard to me. But yesterday he wandered out to eat hay and when I came back for afternoon chores he was still happily hanging with the herd, rather than attached to the nearest fence board. I did see him crib a bit before I fed dinner, so I’m under no illusion that he’s cured (I’ve tried it all), but if this behavior is reduced even the slightest I will be very happy! The ONLY change I’ve made to his management is this feed. So I’m taking that for what it’s worth and will continue to cross my fingers.

My Tractor Supply started stocking it about 3 weeks ago. I started feeding it and have noticed a huge improvement in my horses coat. He is so shiny and sleek! However, last week he decided he was done with the feed. He won’t eat it. Anyone else have this issue? He is normally not picky.
