New “Forage Only” Complete Feed

Thanks for this. Mine still don’t like it.

I just ordered two bags to be shipped to my local TSC. My dude is flying through those 25-pound bags of Standlee beet pulp shreds. At $18.69/bag, that’s getting expensive. I’m glad to hear this soaks up quickly.

My crew has been completely transitioned to this for a couple of days now. So far so good. I do love that it softens up within a couple of minutes with just a bit of water so it can carry supps. My feed room is also a lot less cluttered without multiple bags of different products.

My crew has been slowly switching over to the Forage Only from beet pulp pellets for the past week and half. So far everyone seems to be a fan, although my pickiest mare does occasionally leave a bite or two in her bucket. She would also do this with the plain beet pulp, so not really out of the ordinary for her. I am currently feeding approx 2/3 Forage Only and 1/3 beet pulp, and this seems to be an acceptable ratio for now. I honestly may stick with this long term, as the beet pulp pellets are $18/50 lbs while the Forage Only is $25/50 lbs. I really like the addition of the flax and alfalfa in the Forage Only, and the fact that the Forage Only is more dense, so I can feed my hard keeper mare more without increasing the volume of her meals. I did have to order a bag from TSC for delivery this week as my local Buchheit was out. Ordering from their in store computer gave me free shipping to my house.

Got mine today and replaced some of the shredded beet pulp and chopped alfalfa with it. Horse fully approves! He was licking his feed pan until it shined and hoovering up any tiny morsel that may have spilled. I’m glad he likes it. I’ve got to figure out how much to feed. I will err to the side of generous right now as he’s a good weight and I’d rather him get a little plump and have to ease back rather than have him start to lose condition. I’ll still mix in a little chopped alfalfa, probably half as much, but the shredded beet pulp will cease. I didn’t have much left anyway, so I just mixed it into the top of the bin of Unbeetable.
Fingers crossed he continues looking and feeling good (not too good, lol) on this. I think I’ll get it delivered to the house from now on instead of needing to go get it at TSC.

How does it fluff when soaked? I give my super easy keeper one cup Speedi Beet and love how it expands so she thinks she’s getting a somewhat reasonable amount. But it’s a pain to source whereas I could get the unbeetable much more easily.

I’m curious what others say, but I don’t find it to expand or fluff up much more than regular pelleted grain. Definitely not like beet pulp, where a tiny amount soaks up to fill a bucket. It does soak very fast, which is nice.

(Reminds me of that woman who had a pet squirrel who got VERY EXCITED about the bucket of beet pulp and hid it all over her house :joy:)

I did post pictures upthread of the soaked pellets compared to Tribute Senior soaked.

I am all in on the standlee version. It may be more pricey but at this point I am all about convenience. It does not require soaking even for my old guy.

Yes, this is my experience with it. Less volume but more weight and it soaks up super fast. I used hot water this morning and it was ready to feed in like 5 minutes. I went to put the hay out, came back in the feed room and voila! A bucket of delicious mush.

Can you share the name of it? I can’t find it, although I swear I saw it here. Mine won’t eat Unbeetable.

Thank you!

Ordered 2 bags via the Tractor Supply website this morning with free shipping to the house. It won’t be here till end of next week but figured the wait was worth not having to drive to TSC. Hoping to be able to replace the Dumor alfalfa/timothy pellets with the Unbeetable since it’s only marginally more expensive but the smaller pellet should be easier for the old lady to manage and quicker to soak if I need to go that route. We’ve done various combinations of alfalfa, timothy and combo pellets as well as Speedi-Beet (so $$$ and hard to source) in the past.

I’ll report out once it gets here!

This finally appeared at my TSC so I got a bag tonight and did a quick soak of 1c (since it was time to let the horses out after dinner already), and it did soak very quickly. The 2 hoovers didn’t miss a beat with their taste test. The picky 33yo seemed interested, but he was already at the end of his “this is all I’m eating for now” volume, so I’m not counting anything. Tomorrow we’ll see! But yes, the pellets are tiny, and soft, and soak quickly

Adding a quick update since I’ve been feeding the Forage Only for about a month now. Still mixing about half and half with beet pulp pellets. My 3 piggy ones love it and eat their tiny soaked portion happily. Miss Picky decided this past week that she was not a fan of it soaked (I like to add a lot of water and soak overnight, the Forage Only does seem to have a bit of a gummy texture when soaked, maybe this is because of the flax?), but she will still eat it dry and appears to prefer that for now. Who know, her palette may change again in a week.

I opened a bag over the weekend and I was disappointed in how dusty it was. It was like bottom of the barrel dust quantities. Not moldy or anything, just broken pellet/manufacturing dust bits.

I was not planning on feeding it wet, but this bag I think I will have to because it is so dusty.

That is disappointing. I haven’t experienced any dust in the two bags I’ve opened so far, but I also purchase beet pulp pellets from the same brand, and I have found that the bags can vary significantly in terms of amount of “dust”/pellet size.

I have found it to have some dust as well, not terrible but more than hay pellets.

We have shifted back to using beet pulp shreds as our mash bash for his supplements. He was taking longer and longer to eat it with the Forage Only. I think he likes the texture of the shreds since they fluff up so nice. The Forage Only just kind of dissolves and that was apparently not to his liking. After swapping the shreds back in, he’s been much better about eating it in a reasonable amount of time.

He still loves them plain/dry for his auto feeder though!

Yep same for mine, ate the soaked Forage Only at first, but now seems to prefer soaked beet pulp and wants the Forage Only pellets dry. Thankfully they are small/soft enough that I feel comfortable feeding them dry!
