New Holland Hay Auction

Does anyone have experience with the New Holland Hay auction? I went years ago with my father but I am wondering if you can still get a good deal on Timothy hay there. I am sure it depends on the day but I am thinking about giving it a try. Any input would be helpful! Thanks!

I have been lots of times in recent years. But not much in the last couple of years. I am located west of Unionville just outside of Cochranville so the Kirkwood auction is closer.

Kirkwood doesn’t generally have as many sellers as New Holland but a good selection never the less. Most sellers at New Holland have large loads on offer, 5+ tons at least. Kirkwood generally had sellers with smaller loads and or highest bid by the bale on even smaller loads.

This time of year the selection, amount of seller can be light. Producers know they can get more money and sell larger loads in the fall and winter so they hold back.

A “good deal” is subjective. I am told a fair amount of land has been taken out of hay production to use for more profitable and less work crops. So hay prices will remain on the strong side of things. Expect to pay around $175 per ton for decent quality hay on average. More for small loads, small bales.

I have Orchard with some Timothy and Brome in the mix. 1st and second cuttings for sale By the bale or by the ton. I am producer not a re-seller. Located 8 miles off of US 1 about 12 miles over the Maryland line.
