New horse--hate her name. HELP!

I have obtained a new horse. I think the world of her and I have nothing negative to say about her in general. She’s a hard worker with a great mind and has overcome being in a really shitty situation a few years ago.

I hate her name.

The vet comes Tuesday to draw a coggins and the thought of putting her name on it make me ill. She’s not registered and has never been shown so there’s no registered/show name to fall back on.

She’s also well known locally and I know a new name won’t “stick” at least for a while. Her old owner hates her name as well but we just don’t know what to do (she was given it as a yearling).

So if you had a beautiful black mare with a white star and no other markings named OPRAH what the heck would you do?!

EDIT: I don’t know that i"ll come up with something as a barn name that will work. If I do, it might just be an organic thing… so what about a show name that I can put on her vet records/coggins? Thoughts there? I’ll just keep calling her “O” around the barn…

Change it to HARPO.

I would change her name either to something else that begins with OP or something else that ends with RAH or AH so part of the sound will still be familiar to her. It should help her learn the new name faster, and it may help people adjust to the new name too.

Opal (like a black opal) would be nice.

I like Opal, that’s very cute.

BTW, I don’t know if you mentioned it just because it brought the name issue to mind, but the name is easily the least important part of the Coggins. I’ve owned my mare for three years, and she has four sets of Coggins paperwork with four different names. (The name she came to me with, her registered name four months after purchase when I still didn’t have her barn name, her barn name, and then her show name.)

I hate Harpo. Just. No. But thanks for the suggestion…it’s just too close to Oprah

I like Opal! But I’m not sure it fits… I’ll try it out… the only other things I think sound similar that I’ve come up with is “Opera” (which I don’t love) and “Opa” but I’m 0% greek so I’m just not feeling it. :-/

I hadn’t thought of using the “Rah” or “ah” as an ending…. i’ll think about that!!! I call her “O” and “Opie” around the barn but neither are long term fixes.

Her former owner says that a little girl was calling her “Oprah Elizabeth” but I can’t quite get on board calling her a variant of Elizabeth.

It sounds so petty but every time I think of her as “Oprah” i feel weird.

See I don’t think that’s a bad name. But you could just correct it to Orpah. I had a great aunt Orpah. And that’s what Oprah’s name was supposed to be but the nurse misspelled it on the birth certificate.

You’re SO right. But I don’t want people who are checking her coggins and may have never met her to EVER associate that name with her. KWIM?

Opera
Opa!
Hope

I’d probably laugh .

You have almost a week to come up with a new name, you can do it!

how about Olivia? Starts with Oh and ends with Ahh and much prettier in between.

GOD I hope I can come up with a name. I told my parents and they were aghast… “No! That’s HORRIBLE!”

and as a married adult with my own children, I hung my head in shame.

I’m stumped so far.

Oh, and “Hope” won’t work for reasons I won’t go into. But it’s a good effort.

That is what I was thinking, but Olive, a nice local lady’s name.
There are green and black olives.
Was that not Popeye’s girl friend also?

I think Olivia sounds pretty too.

Or Ophelia, for the Shakespeare in you?

Oh Olivia!

I’ve always wanted to have a horse with a star named Snip and horse with a snip named Star.

OP, are you unfamiliar with COTH rules? We can’t give you suggestions without seeing pictures of the horse.

LOL, call her OPORDER! (Or OPORD)

Olivia also gives nod to Shakespeare. (Twelfth Night) Or, if you’d prefer the heroine, Viola, which does get the -ah sound on the end.

Taraji. Another beautiful black lady…

Someone tell me if the links work!
