New Hunting rules in NC! BE CAREFUL when trailriding!!

Their was a new hunting law put into effect this year for 7 days a week. Its called the Heritage Act and may effect or may not where you ride and when! Wear your orange if you venture out! Be safe!

Bell your horse…very few deer wearing bear bells this year…even a cowbell on the chest isn’t bad to listen to.

Yes I think all the recent work the horse council did to get new horse trails is now down the drain. No place to ride anymore in NC remember as they hunt something all year except a couple of hot summer months.

I wonder what will happen when some hunter kills a person biking /hiking on the A.T.T. in the Triangle, its bound to happen . Its insane that the State of NC thinks its safe for people and hunters to use this area next to the trails. And yet the parking for hunters is 500 feet from parking for hikers/bikers. Also they can hunt right next to the trail but only are told not to shoot across the trail but its ok to shoot along side the trailI. I will not ride horses there anymore its just to not relaxing knowing hunters are next to me

The old bell trick doesn’t work anymore as everyone has ear buds on and can’t hear a thing!

You guys realize that hunting is allowed on public land all over the world right?

And yes the bell trick should/does work. I don’t know any hunters who wear ear buds. Hearing an animal coming is a large part of hunting. Wear orange, make noise. If you come upon people hunting give them a heads up that there are lots of horses around. If it’s a busy area they’ll likely go find somewhere else to hunt. Use the area during the day, most animals aren’t as active then. Most hunters will be out just after dawn and before dusk.
If your private property borders land where people hunt put lots of no hunting and no trespassing signs. If your horses are turned out close by deck them out in orange and put a bell on.

You’re more likely to get hit by a car riding on the road then shot by hunter on public land.

It isn’t the public hunting “all over the world”. It’s public hunting seven d**n days a week, almost all year.

i don’t know their current hunting laws but when I left the OH/PA border there was NO public hunting on Sunday.

Imagine my surprise when I retired to Tennessee (part of the Bible Belt) and Sunday public hunting has been allowed, “since Moby Dick was a minnow”.

i am sorry to all of you so-called hunters but:

  1. I come from a hunting family who ate what was killed or gave to a family in need.
  2. If you can’t get your limit Monday thru Saturday, you have no business looking for game on Sunday. You don’t know how to walk the woods and you’re a lousy shot so, take up fishing.

i KNOW someone (in Tennessee) who couldn’t find anything to,shoot that was in season, so he shot something else out of frustration.

Don’t eeeeeven get me started on why you need to hunt on Sunday, because you will go up against the wrong person. FWIW, I shot target for years with a gun, with a compound bow and ate wild game my friends caught up,until I left the OH/PA border ---- none of which was caught on Sunday — a few of my trail riding cronies were also hunters who scored better than their husbands ------ I never heard them whine about not being able to hunt on Sunday------

Perhaps you should petition to have no hunting on a weekday. Your second statement sounds a little ridiculous when you take into account that most people have jobs which only leaves Saturday and Sunday for hunting. Church isn’t all that popular where I’m from so Sunday doesn’t carry any significance.

I hope you reported the person who was poaching. Respectable hunters who work with Conservation hunters are the only other hunters I associate with. Those hunters can also recite the rules and reg and follow them to a T.

I understand your frustration but it has to be a two way street. I’m just playing devils advocate here. If you don’t like how it is on public land then maybe you need to find private land for your activities, the same way many hunters only hunt private land so they don’t have to worry about other people.

Anybody I know that hunts plans their vacations for hunting season. First Day of Deer is an automatic day off for the school systems where I am from in PA because nobody came to school anyway and it’s likely their parent(s) called in to work sick.

I don’t care if half the world does not attend church on Sunday ----- I would like to be able to ride down my one lane road on my horse on Sunday morning and enjoy the peace and quiet without worry of a stray bullet hitting myself or my horse. I wore an orange vest, I even made an orange hat for my horse but when I learned how close hunters are allowed to be from the road and someone’s property, I stopped my Sunday morning rides.

if everyone I knew for fifty-some years managed to bag their limit in small game and drag a deer out of the woods without doing it on Sunday, Sunday hunting doesn’t need to be legal anywhere.

People stay home for a myriad of other stupid reasons, save some of those days for hunting season.

i stand by what I said:)

The point is that now beside a few private foundations there is no where to ride in NC without taking the risk of being shot. Think it doesn’t happen well how about a child shot off of her horse while out on a large trail ride with her family-dead. A school teacher walking near his property -dead. Friend shot in the hand riding on her property in town! When I moved in to my current farm a neighbor stopped by to tell me how he almost shot the previous owner while they where walking on my new place. He was horrified he almost shot at them and hoped I would wear orange during fall even on my farm!
People hear a noise and turn and shoot. A deadly mistake. I have hear the bolt slide in a rifle screamed and saved my life.
I ride to enjoy myself, my horse and have some peace from a busy life. I can’t relax knowing I have to bell my horse(horrible noise), wear orange and pray. the hunters are paying attention . This is not fun nor relaxing.

I guess I’m going to sell my horses as there are so few places left to ride and now even Sundays are gone. Most of the farms are gone for houses, its the end of a lifestyle for those of us in the Triangle area of NC. I suppose the show people will keep riding but for the rest of us all the land is gone leaving only game land ,enough said.

I wear yellow when trail riding at a city park because there are deer blinds on the edge of that, waiting for the deer to cross into private property just feet away. There has also been poaching, and if someone is willing to poach in the off season they aren’t the kind of person that makes sure it’s a deer and not a person on a horse

This is a sad thread. Between hunting and development and banning horses from existing trails, riding in the woods will cease to exist. I guess it will make PETA very happy.

Here in NY State the Sunday thing has been allowed for years. I remember the relief I felt on Sundays when I didn’t have to expect to run up my hill to look for poachers, or hear shots all over. Those days are long gone. Hunting is also allowed on public lands, but not in most County parks. That doesn’t stop the poachers though.

It’s stressful from October 1st through December 22 with deer season here.

I live in the triangle area as well and we have 45 acres with trails. I did go out on my trails today and go out nearly every day walking with the dogs or riding, but I’m now wearing an orange vest. @walkers60 where are you located?

Love to know where you have trails. I’m near Jordan Lake
