New Kitten- food, etc

I picked up my 12 week old Maine Coon kitten on Friday. We’ve named him Winston. He’s such a love and so bold and confident. When my other 2 rescues came home 2 years ago they were much more shy and reserved. My husband is in love with him too and is already telling me he likes him better hahaha.

Winston is fitting right in just fine! And the other 2 cats are integrating better than I had hoped. Thymos is already hanging out and sniffing and kissing the baby. And Herman hid and hissed at first but now will tolerate being in the same room as long as baby kitty doesn’t look or come to close to him lol. And baby kitty just runs around doing his own thing, playing, running, sleeping, etc.

He came with a bag of Purina ProPlan kitten dry kibble. Should I continue with this? Once he’s an adult my plan would be to feed them all the same food (other kitties diet is below). Should I also start adding wet kitten food right away too? I know the wet food it better for them.

My 2 adult cats eat Royal Canin Urinary SO dry food prescription food (I have one had had a stone that I posted about in another group) and split a can of wet food each night.

And then he’s already had some of his vaccines done, so I need to call my vet and see what else and when he needs to be seen again.

I’ve added some kitty spam pics too lol.

There’s nothing wrong with the ProPlan Kitten, but RC does make a specific kitten formula (actually 2, one for babies, the other for older kittens). All of my kittens have eaten the dry RC Kitten fine (they’ve been a bit more finicky about the canned, liking it one day and not the next).

He is adorable. I’m am fighting against getting another, they are such cool cats.

My breeder has this girl available. I’ve resisted so far

As far as food, I integrated mine in immediately. I feed Nutrisource chicken or salmon. Everyone does great on it. The MC gets raw chicken 3-5 times a week. He was raised in it & loves it.

No advice unfortunately, but as someone who recently added a single orange braincell kitten to a Maine Coon’s home, can I ask YOU some advice?

My MC (Fennario) requires prescription urinary food (c/d, we feed dry) and is a grazer on his food - nibbles on and off all day. New kitten (Guillermo/Gizmo) has the alley cat “I’ve never eaten before and never will again” attitude toward food - I am having a TERRIBLE time keeping Gizmo from eating Fenn’s extremely expensive prescription food. There’s only so long in the day I can lock either behind closed doors, before it turns into essentially constant isolation.

Any advice? How do you keep the non-rx cats from eating the rx food??

(My only thought is to switch to c/d wet food and feed that at night when Gizmo goes to bed with my kid, and feed Fenn and Gizmo the same dry food in the morning - that way it doesn’t matter if Gizmo eats Fenn’s food, and I’ll have 2 food locations so that Fenn at least has a chance.)

they have collars with a chip you can put on your Rx cat and the bowl has a lid that will only open when the chip is near. Could that be an option?

(here comes my opinion that no one asked for) - I also am a big believer in wet food only if that is an option for you. Cat’s are made to get their moisture through food. Their tongues are not made to lap water.

My vet suggested everyone get the RX food ultimately- I’m doing dry RX food and regular wet food and so far so good for my UTI/stone kitty it’s been a few months now.

Currently baby kitty is spending some time in a separate room still to make integration less stressful for everyone- cats & dogs. So, so far baby kitty’s food is in that room and my adult cats haven’t bothered it. Baby kitty has eaten a little of their adult food which the vet said was fine.

Little cat (5lbs) will shove his face in big cat (16lbs) bowl, I think. I literally forces big cat off a food bowl! So once that collar opened the bowl, little cat would shove his entire head and the 1 brain cell it protects into the bowl.

But I think especially since big cat is getting older, the wet food is probably the way to go to solve this particular problem. The moisture/hydration help is something I hadn’t even thought of, that would probably increase his QOL.

You made me laugh out loud with the “little cat would shove his entire head and the 1 brain cell it protects into the bowl”

I hope it all turns out well and everyone is gets what they need and little oinker keeps his one brain cell to himself and not mooches off of others kitty’s bowls.

Yeah he’s going to be quite large. His dad is huge!

Oh dear Lord. I do not need another kitten. I do not need another kitten. I just had another un-neutered young tom show up at my house a couple of days ago. I definitely do not need a poly Main Coon with attitude to spare . . .

Please get her, so I’m no longer tempted. She’s in TX, ready to go in around 3 weeks. She’s going to be gorgeous

Seriously, with the 8 in the house and the who knows how many outside (supposed to be 10, but random cats seem to show up at odd times . . .) I can’t have any more cats! I’ve got to get 2 semi-ferals caught and taken to the vet SOON as it is!

He’s a good looking MC kitten!

I fed Zevon the pro plan grain free until he was about 7-8 months old, now he’s on fancy feast chicken pate like the rest of them. And I have an auto feeder that dispenses small portions of TOTW dry.

Right now I’m debating if Zevon will make it the full 12 months with his troublepuffs. I figured that since they are large breed cats prone to hip dysplasia, even though cats don’t have research like dogs do, I’d take a page out of that book and let him keep his testosterone as long as possible. I mean it’s not like I’m counting (65 days) or anything…

Oh he’s so handsome!! My 2 rescue cats came neutered already. So when I bring baby kitty in I’ll have to ask when they recommend having him neutered too.
