New Kitty (Maine Coon) coming in December!!!!!!!!!

We have all rescue animals but decided we REALLY wanted a Maine Coon cat Kitten. Couldn’t find any Maine Coons through the rescues so we are getting one from a breeder. They have two red boys and we are getting one of them, don’t know which one yet (one will be a show cat the other one will be our pet). So excited!!! Anyone have a Maine Coon?

Congrats! Always wanted one!

ooooh!!! Can’t wait for pics! I’m not sure but I think one of my cats may have Maine Coon in him. He’s from the shelter so I’m not sure what his parents were. He has the mane and the long hair but not the thick THICK coat.

We have two---------sisters that were left in a foreclosed house! Thankfully the postman KNEW there were cats in there so they were only along for a day before the police got into the house and brought them to the shelter.

The shelter called me right away as they had not been cared for as far as brushing. MATS!!! I got them all brushed out over 3 days. They are “the girls”. Loving life and putting up with daily brushing LOL

Be ready of talking back and demanding to be loved! SO sweet and dog like!

We have a Maine Coon – Mac, aka The Big Fluff aka Ninja Cat.

Mac is very, very smart and brave but luckily very good natured. He’s not super cuddly but when he does want attention he gives full body “bumps.” Not much of a lap cat but he sits on me pretty much every night in winter. Being involved in everything is very important and he’s very playful – will play fetch when it suits him and will play any other game for hours. The Ninja Cat name came about because he can be absolutely silent, has incredible balance and lightning reflexes.

As a kitten he was really full on and caused a fair bit of chaos and destruction. Every night we had to tire him out (laser pointers and string on sticks are your friends) else there would be no sleep.

I clicker trained him to enjoy brushing as he really didn’t like it. It’s very handy for other things – like currently he’s got an infected paw pad and it has to be cleaned twice a day. He purrs while we clean it. And he doesn’t run away when the Cone of Shame goes back on. I think he’d learn lots of cool tricks with this but I struggle with time.

All visitors are fascinated by them and he tolerates their admiration. He prefers visitors who want to play with him but not get overly familiar and try to pat him too much.

We love him dearly, he is a lot of fun.

Love our Maine Coon. Be prepared that they are juvenile for 2 years both in physical and mental. So they are still growing (and eating and eating and playing and eating and sleeping and eating) when thye are a year old. It’s a little disconcerting if you are used to other breeds of cats. Do make sure you get them accustomed to being brushed. It is necessary sometimes.
Enjoy.

OMG, that’s like ordering a tack trunk from McGuinn Farms…

expensive.

great.

big.

bucket list. (So you can ignore/eclipse “expensive”)

you’ll need a freight company to bring the cat/trunk to you on a pallet. This isn’t no UPS job.

How will this mammoth cat be shipped? You can’t shrink wrap a cat to a pallet.

You can shrink wrap a cat to a pallet. But it doesn’t generally work out well for the cat, the shrink wrap or the pallet.

On another note, Maine Coons are wonderful cats. I love the big kitty breeds.

I thought more about that and, though I thought I’d get yelled at, I realize that I’d like to see a (big) cat shrink wrapped to something. Of course, I’d just “burrito” the cat and not smother it’s head. Like a cat in a papoose for easy, all-day carrying… and pilling when you need it. But the fur wouldn’t feel good. It would feel like the sparkly vinyl on a 1950s diner booth.

In addition, the title of this thread and your comment about Big Cat breeds makes me think that we need another word for big cats. So when the OP says she’s excited to be getting a “kitty” and then clarifies with that “Maine Coon” in parentheses, it strikes me that we need a new word for an out-sized cat. He’s more than one cat, but not more than one. So a cat that’s one-and-a-fraction needs a different work. Like the way eskimos have a surfeit of words for our one, “snow,” we need more words for more cats.

I had a Maine Coon - I miss him very much. Their personalities are as big as their furry britches! You will have so much fun.

And you absolutely CANNOT come on here an announce such a thing without photos. That is simply cruel.

LUCKY YOU!!! I ADORED my Maine Coon kitty, Tucker, who I lost too soon to a urinary problem. He was so awesome - would fetch toy and bring them back to be rethrown. I loved to sling him (heft him!) over my shoulder and carry him. He would let me carry him like a baby as well. LOTS of nappy fur and sooo sweet and talkative. Would LOVE another one!!! Pictures when they come!

Well, it is a pre-ordered non-show kitten, so maybe it will look like a regular cat.

But just in case this not true and it has pie plate paws (or similar) would you kindly include a well-chosen scaling device in the photograph? That’s what we need in order to properly appreciate a Maine Coon.

congrats on the upcoming new addition! Love Maine Coons!

I assume both parents and all siblings are HCM free and are not carriers of A31P?

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the responses. We had to really look to our new Maine Coon. We are very excited. We are in CA and breeder was in AZ, however they are moving to CA so it will be only a 100 mile trip for our new Kitty to come home (12 weeks on Dec 20). He is a red, but as mentioned there are two red boys and we don’t yet know which one we will get. I am just hoping that our two older rescue kitties will come to love their new little brother. And I know our labrador Jake will be ever so excited to have a new little brother that wants to play with him. We are looking forward to HOURS of entertainment!! Mr.Mukluk is excited that the gender ratio will soon be even as our household will consist of a male/female pair of humans, male female pair of Equines. 2 girl cats, 1 boy dog and finally a BOY cat to make it all even. Oh my. So looking forward to our new boy cat!!! i am very impressed with the breeder who regularly screens her animals for HCM and other issues. I am so excited about our new baby!!! He’s going to be very spoiled!!!

I’ve been feeding the neighborhood “feral” for months. He’s now moved indoors  and is adjusting to a different pace of life. My cat hoarder (sadly not joking) friend was over earlier this week to meet him for the first time and she’s pretty convinced that he’s darn near all MC. He’s very different from my others, but a very good fella. Smart, happy to be complaint, LOVES to sit in a lap. Once he’s acclimated to indoors, I’ll start looking for a permanent home for him.

Yikes…didn’t mean to ramble on so much, but just wanted to say that they are a different kinda cat, but very cool and I think you’re going to LOVE your new kitten! Lots of congrats and please please please please come back and post pics!

I love dem cats, and am FROM Maine, so you get a bonus! I live down here for now and don’t have one (have a himalayan and some sort of rag dollish feral, both fluffy as coons but not as big), and I miss them. They were our barn cats growing up, and seeing them for such outlandish prices makes me wanna go up to my sister’s and scoop up a few kittens to bring down here!

Really?

Are those big Dog Cats just lying around up there in Maine? If you went to a shelter would you find lots of “extra” Maine Coon cats?

I just took a Maine Coon cat from the shelter. I have no idea how a wonderful cat such as himself ended up there, and then didn’t get adopted, but it happened. He is just beautiful, three, and 17 lbs. He has legs like tree trunks, is totally confident, and gets along well with others. I’m still getting to know him, but oh my, what a great breed. Enjoy your red kitten!

This kitty is from a breeder who shows her cats. There were two red males in the litter and one of the two is going to be kept by the breeder, the other will be our new kitty.

Is she going to stand them up in conformation shots and really pick them apart? How do you get a cat to stand on the line for that kind of scrutiny?

I was at a cat show once and saw a judge handle a cat… kind of stretch him out between elbows and stifles. He was quite long, longer than you thought… a lot like salt water taffy would be.
