New Pony!

We just purchased another pony (of my in laws breeding) on Saturday. I dropped off my coming 5 year old pony to an indoor arena about 10 mins from my farm to continue with his training through the winter, and then went to go and look at a 2 year old for training/sales project.

I just wanted to make sure he was a large and he measured just under 14h so should finish around 14.1h or so. Both parents are 14h. I rode his dam once and she was lovely. He has shown a bit on the line as a yearling so has been to shows already. My plan is to do the Cup Pony classes at the Royal as a 3 year old (one class is a line class and the other is a w/t/c class but you have to qualify first by attending 2 qualifying shows in the fall). He will be registered as a Canadian Sport Pony (he is 3/4 BRP and 1/4 Section B Welsh).

So welcome Manny to our farm! He is starting to settle in and is trying to make some friends (he’s out with another 2 year old, a 15 year old and my 28 year old retired pony). I won’t do too much with him all winter (just to come in and out every day) and will start him in the spring when our Ontario weather starts to get better!
Last 2 pictures are of dam and sire

Evil training barn to also have really nice stock for sale.

Manny appears to be a quality one, since he has already being exposed to the rigors of show world that should help in establishing his career in a good direction.

The current two year old we have was shown as a five month old weanling in a large show that had about 1200 head, nothing phased him nor has anything done so as he has begun training . He has repeatedly said he wanted wanted a job as he had been watching the other horses work. So far everything has been anticlimactic it is as though since he has been watching he knows what to expect.

Manny will be exciting to watch as he develops

New pony is growing up! He is 3 this year and my goal is to qualify him for the Pony Cup classes at the Royal Winter Fair in November (line and under saddle classes for Canadian bred 3 year old ponies. There are 2 qualifiers, one on September and one in October. They take the top 20 highest placed from the qualifiers to enter the Royal). I have just started to lunge him and he wore a saddle for the first time yesterday. Walked him around the ring and over some poles and flower boxes, did some trotting in hand (he was shown on the line as a yearling) and he was a very good boy! I didn’t have the girth too tight and noticed the saddle crept up a bit. Problems with round ponies and not too much withers…at least it didn’t bother him too much.

I’m a tad behind starting him, but I don’t have an indoor and the weather just started to get nice the other week. Some Cup Ponies I know are already w/t/c under saddle and even showed at some big shows the other week. But I don’t like to rush and will see what I get soon and will hopefully back him in the next couple of weeks if all continues to go well. He was a little surprised at the canter with the stirrups flapping, so I don’t want to push him too much. He’s a good boy but is very suspicious of EVERYTHING at first. He was sure the flowers were going to kill him, but then got over it in a couple of mins. He likes to snort and think about it at first, then once he’s seen it, its no big deal. I find it better not to push this type, they do better thinking and processing it at their own speed.

I’ve put a bunch of weight on him for the line classes, so he will stay in the diet/dirt paddock with one of my IR ponies as I always worry about them. I have a 4 acre pasture but worry about the fatter ponies and grass. So he can stay on soaked hay for the year while some of the other horses have some pasture time (some go on pasture from 4-2pm then I bring them all over to the dirt paddock for the rest of the day. I have 2 - one will be him- that stay in the dirt paddock and just get soaked hay for the day).
