I want to find POSTS, not threads, containing what I’m looking for. I’ve been 100% unable to do this, even using “advanced” search.
Click the “show results as: posts” radio button on the advanced search page.
It’s at the bottom of the “additional options” box.
Also make sure you are on the “search single content type” tab.

You can also click the save search preferences at the bottom of the advanced search engine box to make whatever you pick as your settings your personal default.

Yes. Thank you. I was, indeed, on the “multiple content” tab-- whatever that means 
Don’t mean to be a grouch, but I do prefer the old set up.
We reworked the default software settings to make the single content search the default, so I’m not sure why you were having that show up as yours… Perhaps you saved the search preferences on that tab earlier, so it was showing up as the default?
If anyone else is still seeing the multiple content search tab showing up as the default, please let us know.
I believe the multiple source search is intended for sites that use the blogging and other features possible in the forum software, which we don’t.
