New SmartPak Flyspray

Pyrethrins and permethrins - totally safe if you 1) read the label and apply accordingly and 2) do not possess 6 or more legs on one body.

And in the case of permethrins, make sure to wash your hands etc thoroughly if you have cats at home - or avoid spraying when the barn cat is around, as it is HIGHLY toxic to cats (not only 6 legged creepers).

BTW - anybody shop WalMart in the States for DEET in the camping department? What is the availability before a make the cross-border trek and wait in the long lineups? Thanks.
Not sure exactly what you are asking.
The Walmart near me sells several brands of DEET containing (different percentages) spray.

Updating this thread to add that OutSmart has been pulled from the market. The product page currently says:

“OutSmart Fly Spray is currently unavailable
We’ve received tons of positive feedback about OutSmart from horse owners across the country since its launch. While we’re thrilled it is working so well for so many, we’ve also heard reports of skin sensitivity occurring in a small percentage of the horses it was used on. Because we stand for healthy horses and happy riders, even this low incidence rate has us pausing to evaluate the formula, making it even better for horses and the riders who love them.”

My friend told me this after her horse had a bad reaction to it. He is a calm 28-year-old who became agitated, ran around, ground his teeth, shook his head, and yawned repeatedly after application. He settled down once rinsed off but has lingering skin issues. She called SmartPak and they issued her a refund and told her that they were pulling OutSmart from the market because so many people have had issues with it.

I am chemically sensitive and have been very happy using CLAC for many years. It’s a concentrate that you mix with water. It doesn’t last as long as toxic products, but it lasts for several hours, long enough for a ride or drive. I use fly sheets and stall fans for daily protection.

Not if you have asthma!

Not if you have asthma!
Please note: I am not saying that people CAN’T have an allergic reaction to a bug spray, but it would be worth noting that the EPA doesn’t think the risks out weigh the benefits for the majority of people and animals.

I just want to make sure that the facts are available for those with concerns.

If anyone has any questions or hesitations about pyrethroids or permethrin (a synthetic form of pyrethroid), please read the following study by the EPA:

“Based on the current analyses, the Agency concluded there is no clear and consistent pattern of effects reported to indicate conclusively whether there is an association between pyrethrins/pyrethroid exposure and asthma and allergies.”

You’re right, the UltraShield black bottle is IT for me. I even tried to make up a bottle of Repel X we had hanging around yesterday, to save some money and make mine last
But they were covered, swishing and miserable. Its so spendy but until I find anything that gives them peace and comfort like UltraShield Black, that’s all I can use. You know its the best when its the one all the Bronco and Repel X people "borrow’ from you all the time and you can’t leave it hanging on your own horse’s stall with his name on it.

I just purchased the Outsmart Fly spray from SmartPak and after 3 days of usage my TB started peeling and his chest was extremely burnt and spotty. Discontinued use immediately and called SmartPak only to be informed that this apparently is becoming more and more common and that they will be reviewing the formula and making changes. 1.5 weeks later, he is still very sensitive and peeling. I’ve been using my MicroTek spray to try and soothe the skin. Any other suggestions to help him heal are greatly appreciated!

Just as well it’s being pulled The Chronicle’s Untacked mag said it’s close i effectiveness to Ultrashield but only last 5 hours. I like my horses comfy but every 5 hours respray? I think not.

Ultrashield Black has sun screen in it for those with bleaching complaints, but of course it’s the most expensive,

I have it and like it. I’ve found it works about as well as Bronco Gold or Tri-tec, and I like the scent and the fact that it won’t give me cancer just by breathing it like Pyhrana (hate that stuff).

The same thing happened to a couple of our horses at the barn after they used OutSmart and mine had the same problem using Pyranha. The vet said that it is similar to having a sunburn peel. He suggested MicroTek or aloe…but basically to just wait for the natural healing process.

I am sad because I did not have the problem and it is one of the few products I have found to work here. The flies here drink the Ultrashield and ask for more lol
