New to drafts - a few questions

Hi,

I’m getting a draft horse after having cob-sized horses, so I have a few questions from the draft folks…

What is the normal range of bit sizes for an 18 hand draft? I measured his mouth (or thought I did) and it came out a little over 7" - I can only find draft bits up to 7". Is it possible I measure wrong? I used a piece of twine.

Also, in the same vein, how to measure for a collar? I (again tried with twine) and it came out around 32/33. Not sure if I measured correctly, as the largest collars I found, at Smuckers, were around 32".

Any suggestions for correctly measuring for a collar would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I am not a driving expert, so I’m sorry I am not much help. I am more of a rider. I enjoy riding the 16-17hh belgians myself.

Bit size is not necessarily correlated with height, so it’s impossible to know what size bit for an 18hh horse. I have a few 6 3/4 and 7" bits I sometimes use on the big drafts with the wider mouths. You might need to mail order the right size, in which case I’d suggest you use a plastic bit sizing tool for a more accurate estimate.

For collars: I just try on what I have on hand until I find a good fit. Is this something you can shop for in your area? A collar needs to be not only the right size but the right fit, too – not something I’d want to mail order & have wrong.

Thanks, MayS.

Understand about the horse size/bit size, but I gave his height just to give an idea. He does have a very large head, something I’m still getting used to

Thanks for the link - I just wanted to get an idea of collars/fitting before I attend Martin’s auction this weekend.

Thanks again!

I have a Belgian gelding that is only 17.2 hands tall, but over 2000 lbs, and he is wearing a 7" bit. His collar is a 26". The Belgian mare I have is almost 18 hands tall, and she is in a 6 3/4" bit, and a 25" collar. When I had measured them for collars, I measured them to be needing much bigger collars than that, but once I got actual collars on them, the sizes above is where they ended up

Do you have a pic of your guy? My Shire is 18.1 and wears a 7" bit and a 28" collar. JoanR who posts here has Clyde geldings that are bigger than my guy, so they may wear bigger stuff, hopefully she’ll weigh in. Our horses are the leggier type, not the massive pulling horse type, that’s why I asked if you have a pic. You can get bits made bigger than 7", but it may be trickier to find them “on the rack” so to speak.

Measuring for a collar, if you can’t just try different collars on him, is best done with something like a carpenter’s square. I’ve seen a nifty diagram for that, but my google-foo is failing me right now.

I have two different body types on my Percheron team. Smoke is more fine boned and she has a 26" to 28" adjustable collar, she sits in the middle at 27". Trixie, her team mate, who has more bulk, a thicker bone mass and heavier look, wears a 28" collar. Both mares stand at 17.2H.

From what I have seen, its not easy to find much in bits over 7 inches

our trainer thought we might need more than 6.5 for our PerchTBx who is only 15.2H but chunky

I was not happy with much of what was available in 7in - very BIG and cheap looking

found that our 6.5 Glory bit does work fine
If I needed larger at this point Id gat a Glory bit custom made for the width of mouth
I like the size of the cheeks and most 7inch bits just have huge cheeks and very long shanks - which we dont use anyway
There are somewhat more larger snaffle type bits available

Your best best for a collar is to try to borrow ANY big collar from anyone first. Put that one and you can then tell if its too big or too small

We got a great buy on a 24inch russet collar work type. I tried to order a new one at a harness shop - needed about 1/2 inch shorter and 1nch wider neck
They told me that all they would really do is stretch the collar wider which would shorten the length a little
In the big collars they are made in inch increments

Suppliers I like are
Bigblackhorse.com
Chimacumtack.com
shipshewanaharness.com
horsetackinternational.com
drafttack.com

best of luck

Redroan- Congrats on getting a draft. I got my first one two years ago Oct. 5, and my only regret is that I didn’t get one sooner.

I have been very lucky to have met some people who no longer had their drafts, but still had several bits that they gave to me since I had a use for them. I just drive mine and do light farm chores with them. I don’t ride them.

My three drafts are Percherons. The gelding is the tallest at just about 18 hands. He is pretty much retired and does nothing except eat and hang out. He is a “grade” horse without any papers. The two mares have registration papers. All three are Black with white stars.

The bit that came with Barney was a 5 and a half snaffle like those I’ve seen used on some hunters. I think it is called a full cheek. Anyway, it was way too small, and it hurts just thinking about him having to work for five years pulling a carriage with that bit in his mouth. He needs a 6 and a quarter inch bit.

All the draft bits given to me are six inches or more with the largest having a 6 and 3/4 inch mouth. My girls are “tiny” drafts-- under 17 hands- actually about 16.2 or a bit more, but both take a six inch bit. One mare Lou is more stoutly built and short-legged. The other, Dixie is a retired hitch horse, and is much more “leggy” and was always a little “light or lacking” in the hindquarters-- or so I was told by the gentleman who trained and drove her until she was seven. Despite their different builds, both take a six inch bit.

Barney came with a 28 inch “farm” collar. Both Lou and Dixie take a 26 inch collar.

I really love working with these drafts. They are so smart and willing, and they seem to genuinely like being around people. All three will follow me around the pasture when I’m checking fence or picking up branches. They will continue to follow me even once they find out I don’t have any food. My light horses lose interest in me much more quickly than the Percherons do.

What breed of draft do you have, and what do you plan on doing with your horse?

Drafts ARE wonderful. One of ours is a particular clown. Lots of stories about Cinnamon!

Our drafts are sweet with decided personalities. If you are new to drafts you may be surprised by their speed and agility. They may not be dainty looking … but they can MOVE!

As far as bits go we found that the normal measuring for bits that we do gave us a larger size than the horses actually needed. No one locally carries any equipment for drafts. (We’re lucky to find halters for them)

We’ve ordered from drafttack.com and bigblackhorse.com. With great success. I’d call them and talk to them about your concerns … I’m sure they’d work with you.

Again CONGRATULATIONS! You’ll love your draft horses!

Thank you everyone for your replies!

My new draft is an 18 hand black Percheron gelding. He rides and drives, and I am anxious to do both with him.

I didn’t see any harness that I liked at Martin’s this weekend, but I did pickup several bits to try different sizes for him.

I also picked up a draft sized Meadowbrook. Has anyone had any experience restaining the wood and repainting one?

It’s not in bad shape, but I do not like the pinstripe color (lime green).

I’ll try to borrow a collar to see what fits him best. Anyone with drafts in Northern Virginia?

I dont know your budget on harness but we got some pieces made by Becky Zimmerman
Zimmerman Harness in Ephrata PA
717-354-5667

Her prices are reasonable and she does both leather or Beta
does a lot of draft stuff as well as light horse

There is a collar shop somewhere in Ephrata though Becky does stock a lot of field collars

My 18 hand mare wears a 5.5" or 6" bit and a 24" collar.

My 19.1 hand mare wears a 6" bit also and a 26" collar.

My 17.3 hand mare has a 6.5" bit and a 27" collar.

My 17.2 hand gelding wears a 6" bit and a 24" collar

My 17.2 hand stallion wears a 27" collar and a 6" bit.

My 17 hand mare wears a 5.5" bit and a 23" collar

All are Percherons.

A piece of garden hose can work very well for measuring bit size.

There is an excellent way to measure collar size in drafts -I don’t know why, but it seems to work. “Measure the circumference (widest spot on the horse’s front leg, usually under the armpit). This will give the collar size, within an inch or so.” People tend to use collars that are WAY to big -remember, “there should not be any more space between the horse’s neck and throat of the collar than will allow your fingers, when laid flat on the inside, to pass through freely.”

Also, I often see bits that are too low and too big and the other big harnessing mistake is having the breeching sagging down too low.

I am SO going home and checking this out now!! I want to see how close it is in measurement!!! I have not heard of that before, but then again we are newbies too

Thanks for that little measurement trick
