Has anyone used this? It’s less expensive than Legend and I pulled up the approval doc at the FDA. It states that it is the bioequivalent of Legend and they approved it as a generic drug. It was just approved last year. I hadn’t heard of it.
My vet told me they were releasing a generic version. Hooray!! How much is it per vial?
Thanks!!!
Well at Heartland Vet it is 59.95 per vial if you purchase the 4 vial package. That is $30 less than their price on the single vial Legend and about $25 less than their price on the 6 vial pack of Legend. I am referring to the 4ml IV dose, of course. The only way to get close to that with Legend is to buy the single 20ml vial; which ends up being about $72 a dose.
I’ve had both of my horses on it since it came out & it seems to be as effective as Legend.
When does the Adequan patent expire?

Not soon enough!!
I have used it as well on my guy, and most people in my barn switched from Legend to NexHA. My guy is on it as a preventative measure every 6 months, so I can’t comment as to the effect.
We use Map-5 (order from heartland) with great results and actually contains more HA than Legend per dosage. We give it to my horse once a month and its amazing after being on it a couple a months the difference and we can immediately tell when the month is up and it wears off.
I think the HA works. I’m not so sure about the Adequan. Maybe if I used it once a week the Adequan might work. But I notice a difference with the HA. It’s good stuff.
Cswoodlandfairy, I assume you are injecting the Map-5. This product - from what I can tell – is used for embryo transfers, not joint issues. What led you to use this product for joint issues? Are you still doing this?
My vet prescribed Nex HA to my horse and we were unsure about what it was exactly (my non-horsey dad was there when the vet came out ;)) Good to know that is really is the generic Legend.
what is the administering protocal? IM or IV?
This looks pretty interesting. How did you find out about this versus Legend or NexHA?
TIA!

Our vets used to use MAP-5 off label as joint injection as well, but now it is quite similarly priced to Legend from the vet school. Based on the information I found, both Legend and MAP-5 (and NexHA) contain 10 mg/mL of HA sodium. From my understanding, the MAP-5 contains only HA and saline, while the NexHA and Legend formulate HA with 3 different sodium salts. It all seems to be the same stuff, but because MAP-5 is formulated for cryopreservation, it is not to be used as a therapeutic agent, and doing so is off-label. The vets that I know that used MAP-5 used it both IA and IV.
My Nex-HA is 4 ccs IV.
I am trying it on my 12 yr old this week. Nice alternative that I may actually be able to swing on a monthly basis now.
We did a lot of research after a vet told us about it. I started it June of this year and its made a WORLD of difference for my horse, I can now tell when its time for his next shot. His problem area is his hocks.
Another big difference we saw was in his Jumping. At anything over 3’ if I put him at a tight spot he just couldn’t get out of it and 9 times out of 10 hit the breaks. Just yesterday we hit a spot that he would have normally refused and he had no problem rocking back and getting over it (it was one of those three legged type jumps). No rails and no problem. I’ve actually had less and less refusals at a short distance the longer he’s been on the stuff.
It actually contains a bit more HA than Legends per 10ml that you would give, but its been a great cheaper alternative than Legends for us. I’ve also recently noticed that Heartland Vet Supply has it listed under Joint and Pain meds.

For anyone that is curious on how much HA you are getting for your dollar, I did the following cost comparison (based on the Heartland Vet Supply prices, and assuming you get the multi-dose option)
Legend:
20 mL vial containing 10 mg/mL = 200 mg HA at $389, making it $1.95 per mg HA
Map-5:
4x10 mL vials containing 5 mg/mL = 200 mg HA at $211.80, making it $1.06 per mg HA
NexHA:
4x4 mL vials containing 10 mg/mL = 160 mg HA at $239.80, making it $1.49 per mg HA.
The only thing that differs is that NexHA and Legend are given in 4 mL doses, with a total of 40 mg HA, and Map-5 is given in a 10 mL dose which contains 50 mg of HA.
