Hunter celebrates 500 days following hounds

The hunting career of a game little mare has reached a major milestone — 500 days out with hounds over a 15 year period.
Roffes Sula, 22, owned by Claire Eke of Bradworthy, Devon, achieved this goal with the Tetcott hunt.

It was a proud occasion for Claire and Sula when, alongside master and huntsman Andrew Bozdan, they proudly led the hounds into the village of Pyworthy for a lawn meet at the Molesworth Arms.

Claire said: "She has been absolutely fantastic and I have so many vivid memories of us hunting together. Our partnership began in Surrey in 1986 when I bought Sula as a yearling.
“Following a successful few years show jumping, and winning local working hunter and riding horse classes, I started hunting with her in 1992.”

Before the hounds and riders set off from the Molesworth Arms, hunt secretary Rita Morris marked the occasion by presenting Sula with a bag of carrots.

Sula, a 15.2hh partbred Arab, had her first day out, aged seven, with the Old Surrey and Burstow Hunt, and took to it with enthusiasm, said Claire.

She will go anywhere over anything — even wire — and has only fallen twice when out, she added.

Claire has hunted Sula with the Tetcott since 1997 when she and her family moved to Devon.

“In December that year Sula suffered a very nasty injury after jumping into the River Tamar and impaling herself on a submerged metal spike,” added Claire.

“But thanks to the skill and brilliance of Mark Shepherd, of Penbode Veterinary Group, Sula was back hunting again in February.”

During one hunt, the mount of Robin Nicholls, the then master and huntsman, lost a shoe and he carried on with Sula.

“He said ‘she’s born to it’ when returning Sula after dark, all washed down and very happy,” said Claire.

Claire remembers another dramatic incident out hunting when she spotted a sheep drowning in the Tamar in a January flood.

“Only Sula and I were mad enough to go in for it ,” she said.

After “doing a Mark Phillips” and emptying her riding boots, Claire remounted, soaking wet, to continue hunting for the rest of the day.

Claire has kept detailed records of every hunt they have attended in her hunting journal.

Cool story

I have two hunt horses. I have one that’s hunted two seasons as a back up horse and 2 1/2 seasons as the main horse. I counted up how many times he’s hunted and It’s only 32. I can’t imagine what it takes to get to 500. I guess you have to only have one horse and go out at least twice a week. Amazing accomplishment

Just Wow - a great, sound horse is key here, and glad they gave her her due!
Embarrased that in 17 years I’ve only hunted 229 times :frowning:

How fantastic! 500! I can but dream! :)

I dunno…

But do people REALLY count how many times they’ve hunted a season or over their lifetimes!!! I haven’t a clue…am I supposed to be counting??? NOW you tell me!!! sheeeesh…So needless to say if I haven’t counted for myself; I sure haven’t counted for my horses either! Hope they get over it…

Some folks keep very detailed diaries. Much too organized!

One of my hunting buddies counts her times out each season. I was surprised – I never thought to doing that. I had to go back and count up my times out – didn’t even come close to her’s…but, then again, I didn’t start hunting until after endurance season was over (end of October). So… I’m at 20, and still counting once the ground allows us to start hunting again… safely!

I’m only at 15 for the season

But I can only hunt on weekends for the most part and I missed a couple and they cancelled a few. In fact I think they cancelled the hunts when I was out of town anyway for the most part. I’ve actually hunted three Wednesdays.

Last year I didn’t start hunting until middle of January. I only got nine hunts in.

I got 22 hunts in the year before.

I haven’t kept track of them all. I guess I’d be lucky to break 100 after hunting on and off for 26 seasons. There were a lot of seasons I never hunted at all but my first hunt was Blessing of 1981. I hunted mostly as a guest until last year. I hunted before that as a guest or with landowner/family privledges.

I have kept track over the last five seasons. Before that it was very sporadic. I do a little write up which has evolved over the years.

memories!

You know I bet we’ve all contemplated doing a nice hunting diary in a nice fancy leather bound book in our best penmanship with a fancy fountain pen for re-reading later or for posterity. I’ve looked at those wonderful blank paged volumes and never actually bought one. Of course nowadays it’d be a BLOG!! I wish I had some of the details of many of those hunting memories down because I don’t want to forget them as I already have in many cases. I don’t want to forget the people! How sad. But writing/blogging would take time I just don’t have I suppose…unless I gave up COTH!!

Not fancy

I just do it in word. Doesn’t take any space around the house. I print them up at the end of the season and give them to the huntsman in a notebook. One of our Masters used to make copies of her diary and give them out at Xmas to a select few. They were very entertaining as she made comments about who was late and who was inappropriately dressed etc.
