He is a lovely person, very kind and helpful, down to earth.

He once was the Guest Speaker at a riding club dinner and he explained to us how he first started in his career. He first worked in a junior admin role at a local office, from where he would run home at lunch time, saddle up one of his two horses, put a head collar and lead rope on the other and then speed, with both horses, around his timed lunchtime circuit of farmland tracks, both horses jumping any 5-bar gates along the way. Then home, untack and run back into the office. It was, he said, some years before he discovered people found jumping a pair of horses over 5 bar gates was a bit unusual.

(A 5-bar gate is usually from 3ft 7ins upwards and, obviously, is a vertical with minimal ground line and on a farm track often out of mud and rutted ground).
