In cinemas 5/9. I can think of Phar Lap :heartbeat:, Seabiscuit :expressionless:, and Secretariat (can’t do emojis for ‘fun but dumb’. DH loves it )

I can’t think of an actual documentary that would ever get released to theaters in the US.

This is awesome. Can’t wait to see it. I hope they feature Mark Beevor, the groom who was thick as thieves with Big Star. Especially the part where he bawls. The FEELS!

My favorite part of the awards ceremony in Rio was when Mark was using his ring towel to wipe his own eyes, and then Nick used a ladder to get back on the horse for the victory gallop. That was so great. All of it.

Great interview with Laura Kraut featuring more bawling :joy:. Ostensibly about Windsor but with much Nick Skelton detail.

Thank you for the link to this BBC documentary! The (relatively historical) footage of the course at Hickstead is a treat.

I’ve got a ticket to see this next week. Very limited screenings in the UK but it’s worth a 4 hour round trip, isn’t it?

I’d forgotten about the half chaps with fringe! I had a pair.

I kind of want a pair.

I have green suede full chaps with fringe, but I missed the fringed half chap era :joy:

I wonder if anyone here who worked at a race track remembers them? I think they were popular there, as well as at Hunter and Jumper barns.

I was a kid and I thought they were very “cool”. :joy:

I think they look like fun and could probably be convinced to buy a pair if I ever come across some!

I don’t remember how long the fad lasted. I only wore them for schooling or hacking, I didn’t see them at shows.

I had rust colored full chaps with fringe. :joy:

I just got to the part about the 1986 World Championships in Aachen - I think my favorite horse documentary ever is BBC’s the Horse in Sport: Show Jumping which focuses a lot on Gail Greenough and Mr. T in 1986 and how everyone seemed to underestimate her and her riding ability.

And with that in mind, it’s interesting to hear Nick talk about his pretty disastrous ride on Mr. T and how he tried to ride as quiet and as light as Greenough, though the previous rider had apparently lit Mr. T up.

Also, I wish horse swaps were still a thing in some show jumping competitions (I know it still exists in equitation and the catch rides of IHSA and similar leagues are very much the same idea). I understand why it’s not, but dang, it’s fun to watch.
