Nick Zito

Once the quintessential New York trainer, only has one in today, which ran up the track. Only one entry for the 15th as well. Feel bad for him. Anyone have any info/insight on what happened to his stable?

I am always interested in a conversation about Zito. He was trying to regain success in 2015 as this article points out.

I have always thought that Zito fails at assessing racehorse potential and ability. He, imo, is no Bill Mott, Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown, Bobby Frankel, Woody Stevens, Charlie Whittingham, etc. I would compare him to a Leroy Jolley or John Veitch. Zito has had a few great horses but they made him, not vice a versa.

I love that Nick Zito and his wife have made it a commitment to ensure that every single horse he has trained is retired properly.

D Wayne went through a bit of a drought IIRC.

He lost a lot of his big owners.

Really?

So the “kick them while they’re down” type of post is an accepted idea now?

By all means how about we insult you and question you when you’re already aware that your life isn’t what it once was.

You’re not Nick. You don’t know what he’s doing or why. He could have a health issue, or a family member may need his time more than the owners. Or he could just want to rest on his laurels a bit. All of these are well within his rights.

I knew him in New York and he was as nice of a guy as they come. And this I’m saying from a barn that competed against him.

Back off…go leave the bubble of the internet for a bit and go pull some weeds if you feel better pulling things out at the root.

Haskin has written a nice BH article on Nick. As Haskin points out, with the lost of top owners once top trainers meet obstacles to continuing success. I recall Allen Jerkens lamenting the same when he opened his public stable.

Not a business for the faint of heart, and Zito has plenty of heart.

I don’t know what to make of an article that talks about all of Zito’s training successes then seemingly blames racehorse owners for not continuing to give him top horses to train or more money to spend. The article doesn’t mention why his good owners left. That would be interesting to know.
