Nightmare for Penn National

It wasn’t “right before” the race. It was a matter of hours into the weeks long withdrawal period. But of course human beings don’t ever make mistakes so it had to be an intentional decision to defraud the betting public with no regard for the horse’s welfare /s

@Texarkana I was thinking of racing and the use of drugs. But I think you have put your finger on that particular aspect of “more is better”.

One notable difference between the UK and the USA is that UK vets have a monopoly on treating animals (it is far less regulated for people!). Drugs are tightly controlled. Obviously there are ways around getting hold of veterinary drugs but, in the main, people use vets rather than treating their own animals. Vets still have very positive trust and approval ratings.

I think the “people treating their own” is a far greater problem in show and pleasure horses than it is in racehorses here. Thoroughbred racing is pretty tightly regulated and true pharmaceuticals are controlled in the majority of states (that doesn’t apply to non-approved concotions people acquire). Sure, there are people doing sketchy things behind the scenes some places… but the bulk of the administration of medication is done by a vet or under the supervision of a vet IME.

Problem is, many vets are also on board with the “more is better” method of operation. Sometimes because they are corrupt, but most of the time because they have to make a living, too.

Reading this article makes me sick. I hope the veterinarian and those trainers are charged with abuse. The percentages of horses that received the known injections and either, died, never race again, or were found lame on race day is outrageous. Pretty obvious this poor horses were physically unable to run.

… of those horses injected, 30% never ran again, 10% were observed to be lame after racing, 3 died of injuries during racing. Chilling.

This whole situation is beyond disgusting. I wish they would all never be allowed near a horse again. How does a “vet” do this???
