I recently got a hay delivery that had nightshade (horse nettle) in it. Our horses got a few flakes before I started seeing the berries and pulled the hay yesterday. I know they tend to eat around it and avoid it, but really didn’t want to take any chances. This morning, one of our horses had quite a few very large welts. I’m wondering if the two are related - either by eating some or possibly laying in the stems that may have ended up on the floor of her stall. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I have a call in to the vet, but seeing if I can get any more information. Thank you!
If it is easy to spot I would go through the flakes before feeding, call your hay supplier and get a refund/ replacement and hopefully he will spray the fields to kill it asap.
Hopefully it is just in a few bales. Maybe someone cut too far on the outside edge of the field than normal.
