No coverage of FEI finals in Saudi Arabia

Wow. Way to take a stand there! https://www.worldofshowjumping.com/en/News/No-coverage-of-the-Longines-FEI-Jumping-World-Cup-Final-2024-on-WoSJ.html

Quite a bit different than the Plaid Horse article I just read which concluded with “Join us in Riyadh to celebrate the rich legacy of Saudi Arabia’s equestrian heritage and embrace the captivating future of this remarkable city.”
Sportwashing anyone??

I applaud their decision and appreciate their stance on women’s rights.

I don’t think we should have even sent a team there to compete.

I’m worried about the horses with the crazy flooding in Dubai. Hopefully they all made it safely.

It’s also bizarre Matt Harnake is there as a rep for the event when he is LGBTQ.

I know at least one jumper got there last week, and I’m guessing they probably all were on the same schedule. So hopefully that was not an issue.

The video clip on the news the other day of the planes sloshing through the water at the airport there was crazy.

Is there live scoring for it anywhere?

Edited to add: Here it is.

Has anyone commented on TPH yet about it? Or is everyone too intimidated to cross PK? No snark towards you- I haven’t been on FB to see.

Dubai and Riyadh Saudi Arabia are quite a distance apart. Dubai is on the gulf, Riyadh is not, it is in the center of Saudi Arabia.

The WC is an individual event, so nations don’t send teams.

The dressage has started, but for some reason the scores are abnormally low for many of the horses.
There are two more rounds to go before the final; maybe scores will go back up.

There were three Americans in the top 12 of the first round. Yay for them!

Kent Farrington was tied for 4th, Skylar Wireman was 10th, and Jill Humphrey was 12th on her American bred horse.

I am not on Facebook so I haven’t seen anything but I’d certainly be curious to hear if anyone is calling them up on it!

Interesting that horse welfare isn’t included as a reason not to cover the WC.
KSA has a dismal record in that department, which the FEI is very aware of.

Wow go FEI!!

I don’t know about the jumpers, but the dressage horses all arrived days ago - they traveled from Miami on the 5th, spent a couple of days in Belgium, and then went on the Riyadh from there.

I don’t disagree - the scores look quite low for what these combos have been getting all season long.

Maybe they’re finally starting to punish horses behind the vertical.

So I watched the first day’s class. Kevin Staut jumped the wrong jump and then made the turn to the correct one. He was eventually eliminated.

Oof. I would imagine he will be kicking himself all the way home.
