Plus Cocaine. Pablo Escobar. I mean, Medellin is somewhere down there, right?
< shudder >
Nevermore.[/QUOTE]
Wait, the abundance of cocaine is a reason NOT to go?!

When I hear “Rio” I just think of the movie “Blame it on Rio”.
Yes there were some Canadian athletes that were getting to the events by cycling. They were afraid they would miss their event due to the horrendous traffic.
I’m watching the women’s all around gymnastics and while there seems to be more people in the stands than for the team event, but definitely not packed.
In other news, Simone Biles is just a freak of nature
She’s AMAZING! Man, the height on the floor routine?!
I think that zika was a HUGE factor. True, the panic seems to have blown over now. But 2 - 5 months ago when most people needed to be making plans there was still a feeling that it was not only dangerous, but also that going could help it spread worldwide. We now know that it is going to spread worldwide whether people travel to the Olympics or not. But that was NOT the common understanding at the time when most people were making their decisions.
No, I would not judge a whole contentment by ONE city and ONE games. Honestly I am pleasantly surprised by how well it seems to be going. (Granted, I can’t watch much since I work and have to ride, so I am not the most informed). Nor do I really care.
I got to see videos of Blueberry and Barney, so I’m good.

And I can’t get Barry Manilow out of my head (at the Copa, Copacobana, music and passion were always the fashion)…
What??? Um there were lots and lots and lots of empty stands in London. It was all over the news and people were furious.
Seemed like high attendance for beach volleyball when I watched it last night.
Clearly, the equestrian events need to get onboard with viewer-friendly dress: bikinis for all riders!
I’ve been hearing this comment all over, as if the only places it’s appropriate to hold Olympic games are in Europe and North America (this is routinely what follows up the comment that we should have never allowed a non-first world country to host). They’re a world wide event. I think people (maybe not in your case) are scared off by the foreign feeling of South America vs. the safer, more familiar environment of the west/global north.
The global economy isn’t great, people are working a lot, travel isn’t always a real option for people these days so low attendance isn’t that shocking. Most people I know are avidly watching from home. There have been security issues, traffic issues, attendance issues, etc. etc. etc. at games in the past including in Europe and US (Atlanta??), which people are conveniently forgetting at the moment.
Rio is a great place to visit - in fact, all of South America is fabulous. I appreciate the attempt by the IOC to share the love a little bit.

Back in the '20 and '30s, I believe, Vaulting (on horses) was an Olympic event, one that got dropped. Now, considering that Gymnastics and Track & Field (and I suppose basketball) are the Premier viewership events for the Olympics, I think vaulting ought to be reinstated. I mean - gymnastics on horseback - young women (and men) in sparkly leotards - on horses!!! What’s not to like???
What do you think of splitting up related events to different countries, so no one country has to fund the whole thing? DH and I have discussed this, not sure how it would go over. Do you think that would take away from the Olympic experience from the athletes?

Or have 2-4 permanent venues for the Olympics that get rotated. Greece has the infrastructure from the 2004 Olympics which are mostly rotting away now, would need repairs but most of it is still there. They could use the economic boost, and the Olympics are Greek, so there is the historical aspect of it.
Rotate the games among a few different continents. It would actually make the games profitable again, instead of having countries build expensive venues over and over again that a lot of time are abandoned after only two weeks of use.
Let’s have the olympics in places where shots aren’t fired into the competition venues.

Or where bombs are set off, like when they were in Atlanta? Where do you suggest?
Agreed!

There’s no need for the snark.
There is a big difference between Atlanta and Rio (at the present time).
That’s very obvious from all the threads on problems at multiple venues.
No, we are not all agreed.
