Here’s a showbill from a local HJ schooling show. This is their “Novice” show

They also run local affiliation shows, here is the showbill so you can see the difference.

They have sunk A TON of money into their facility and it really shows. I know there are no oxers in their 18 and 2 foot divisions at their Novice shows.

Here is our website. On it are our links to our prize list and a link to the photographer so you can see the clientele that we attract as well as our courses. We average 60-80 horses in a hunter show with 350 rides. A jumper show has 50-80 horses with 175 rides. We gross 7-10k per show, so 15-20k in a weekend of shows. This supports the park facilities, footing improvements, educational events, and a state park aide.

We also have a very active Facebook presence and work specifically with the trainers to make sure they are happy with our offerings. Or show series is a great stepping stone to the rated shows, but even we have decided that our niche is not rated shows and is instead the schooling experience. And for the record, we include oxers at 2’6" in hunters and 0.75m in jumpers.

Wrong

Oh, not you! “Pebbles47”, the angry troll on page 5 with back-to-back posts to just so happened to join COTH over the weekend. Since there was no schooling show to complain about IRL, Pebbles apparently decided to join COTH for a little rant![/QUOTE]

So sad to disappoint when you believe you are so clever, but I’m not even close to being a trainer. Keep up your sleuthing. Sincerely the “angry troll”. Now grow up

I’m sure it’s a regional thing, but at the local shows near me there are not oxers in 2’ hunters and equitation.

Throwing some change in here…

It’s been a while, but I grew up on the H/J circuit. I don’t remember oxers in the 2 ft division; they may or may not have been there though.

What I can say, and what might be more applicable here, is to consider how you can make the most people happy, and therefore build a reputation of a great show to attend. (I’m assuming you want people to show up.) If your show is so small that riders from a single barn scratching their ponies(? you said pony?), your show is probably pretty small - especially if that is a 2 ft division, since that is often the most popular at schooling shows. If it was me, I’d try to make those people happy if I could, particularly if it meant they would come back. And if my show is small and I’m hoping it will grow, I would be as nice as pie to those people in hopes that they will come back and will also tell people how accommodating the place was. Given that they showed up to what seems have been a small show, I’d want to go the extra mile for them.

Spot on.

I’m in the camp of “be the show that your clientele wants.” IF that means no oxers in the sub-2’6", so be it.

Now, as a rusty amateur who is not what one might call “brave,” I have to say that I don’t see what all the fuss is about. IMO, there’s nothing particularly terrifying about a 2’ oxer, and if a rider can’t handle 2’ oxers, (s)he should perhaps stick to the x’s until more comfortable. That said, if I hoped to make a buck, I’d shake my head and do what the customer wants (and be sure they know what to expect, with “including oxers” or “no oxers” in the prize list as appropriate).

One more reply to say how disappointed I am that photos of these riders and the facility have been shown on here, including photos of children. I think it would be very easy to identify where these were taken if you had been there, which is just bad for business. I think it is also poor form to post photos of other people’s kids, without their parents knowing. How disappointing.

It’s also really not cool to trash talk the facility you are putting shows on for. Why on earth would you do that in a public forum?

DD was in a walk/trot, cross rail class once with an in and out!! You can never be sure at some shows!! The W/T jumps looked/were major “jumper” jumps made into cross rails…class was a disaster!!!

crosscreeksh - I did a puddle jumper class that had a bending line 1 stride (on a pretty drastic angle set in a corner of the ring) WITH SPACE to go around on the rail.

Pretty much every horse jumped the first jump, and stayed straight to go to the outside of the other fence.

It wasn’t a very fair question…even the Novice and Low jumpers that were pretty experienced were NOT expecting that and were having issues.

Holy cow, who would think that’s a good idea! I’m pretty sure I would have loved it though when I was doing W/T crossrails, but I was an over confident tween back then.

Mad Mission-- those photos are on a photographer’s website. Go to a show and your photo might show up on one. Not sure that’s really cause to get upset. Whether they were linked in this thread or not… They were out on the web anyway.

vxf111, normally I would agree. That kind of photo can be found all over. In this case though, I find it to be poor form to leave footprints of what facility this show took place at all over the thread, especially when someone is trash talking that facility and competitors at the show. It just doesn’t seem like a good way to do business. But then, no one has to agree with me ;).

I totally agree with you that it’s bad to do business that way. I just think it’s not the photos so much as all the negative commentary about the competitors, that’s bad for business. The linking to the photos seems more innocuous.

Agreed!
