No such thing as a 5' tube gate?

So I’m trying to come up with a budget for a project I’m (slowly) working on and I need to find a 5 foot wide tube gate. In my searches, it seems there is no such animal?

Found a chain link gate @ Lowes that is 5’ wide, but it definitely didn’t look very sturdy. Also found a 5’ wide dog gate similar to a chain link gate, only with square mesh, but I really don’t want to pay $150 per gate (I need two).

The gates are to go across an opening that is a little larger than 5’ inside a barn. The gate will be part of a stall wall. So I need something sturdy. I’d rather not have to drop in additional posts to make the space smaller to fit a smaller gate… but unless someone has a source for a 5’ gate, I guess that’s what I’ll have to do.

You can cut a tube gate down, use a bit bigger pipe to make sleeves and connect both pieces at the length you need.

We have had a few places an off size gate was needed and we just cut a bit bigger one down.

Ask any local welding shop about that?
Generally they have some scrap pipe they can use, some times they won’t hardly even charge for that bit of work, should take maybe 20 minutes.

I think they come in 4’ and 6’, but not 5’.

I like Blueys suggestion… get a ten foot panel then make two five footers out it

I like your idea best if you are going to be cutting.
A 10’ in half would just fit right and only have to add two end vertical pipes, easier than five or six horizontal sleeves time two.

Our local welding shop closed several years ago. The owner retired. I have REALLY missed them! The alternative is more of an artist - he makes beautiful custom handrails and entrance gates and such, but boy is he expensive! :lol: Cost $105 to just straighten a Tarter dog run panel that got a bit bent when a large tree fell on it in a bad storm. So there’s no telling what he would charge to modify a gate. So, I had considered a 10’ cut in half but since it would probably cost more than a sturdy off-purpose gate.

I can build a wood/wire mesh gate no problem (and cheaper). I just thought I’d splurge on nice, painted tube gates if I could find them in the right size. Actually, @clanter I think it was pics from your barn that gave me the idea of using tube gates for my project.

I would assume this panel would be strong and durable. But its meant for goats/sheep = will it be okay with horses? I like the Tarter products - I have several.

I don’t need the horse to go through the gate - its just for a human to get from one stall to the next stall. Horses will enter/exit the stalls from a 4’6" opening on the east wall to the paddock. So horses can come and go at leisure.

Second one is what I was going to suggest, to look up bow gates.
Those come in several widths, we have one for a round pen that is 5’.

The first one is not good for horses, way too light and the holes in the mesh seem too large for horses.
They could stick a foot thru and be hung and in trouble.

Too bad they don’t just sell the gate part of the round pen/arena gate, because the overhead part to stabilize the fence/pen really does no good for my application. But the gate portion would be perfect. However, not paying $150 for a gate. So close, but yet so far… :lol:

Does this need to be a tube gate? How about making the gate/door out of wood - so much easier to customize. Edges can be covered in metal if you have chewers.

FWIW…A ten foot gate is NOT actually 10 feet wide. The brackets are included in the measurement and a 10 foot gate will swing freely through a 10’ space…Just sayin!

I make my own custom sized gates with 2x4’s or 2x6’s…cover with a good 4’ welded wire and cross brace. Cheaper and better IMO!

Yes, I can certainly build stall doors. Did it for my big horse barn a number of years ago. They are like the bottom 1/2 of a dutch door.

I just liked the idea of “install the hinge screws, set the gate and voila, you’re done!” for this project. :lol: So, if there was such a thing as a 5’ tube gate or 5’ wire mesh gate already in existence that wasn’t out of this world expensive, thought I’d go that route this time. As I’ve aged, I find I’m willing to pay a bit for “simpler” solutions to things! :wink:

I’m not sure who decided way back when that gates would only be in even widths. Seems to me that a company could really make some money offering off-sized gates for projects such as mine.

Check FB and Craigslist for the roundpen gate section? Never know what ya find. Not hard to sand down and repaint pretty.

I have these panels/gates for goats and hogs. I am not sure I would use them for horses. They are not standing up well to my goats and hogs.

Just in case someone is reading this thread in future, also looking for custom width gates, I stumbled on this company that will make any size gate you need. The 5’ 6-tube gate they quoted at $71 I thought was quite reasonable. The $500+ for shipping, not so much! :lol:
