Nobody messes with our donkey

Tony, our yearling mini donkey, was getting a little time in the yard, running and playing. We were loosely watching him. For some weird reason only known to a young donkey’s mind, he trotted right over to a little bush on the edge of the garden and stuck his nose in it. Unfortunately, there’s an active wasp nest in there that we just discovered yesterday. Of all the places to go…maybe it was the noise that made him curious. We spotted him and tried to call him away, but he ignored us. Anyway, he got nailed several times on his nose by paper wasps. He ran off, dropped to his knees and rubbed his nose on the ground. Poor little donkey! I called him to follow me back to the barn where I gave him a cool bran mash with some Bute to help his swelling. Meanwhile, my dearly beloved avenged him. He grabbed lube oil and a lighter and created a mini flame torch to flambe the wasps. By the time I came back from the barn, he had torched the nest entirely and was hosing it off. He looked at me and said, “nobody messes with my ass.”

Anyway, we’ll check on the wee one shortly to see if the Bute kicked in.

These weeds grow everywhere in my part of the US. (Their real name is the Broadleaf Plantain. Go figure!) They’re thought to contain anti-inflammatory compounds & have long been used in folk medicine as a poultice for insect stings & bites. I’m not a die hard natural remedy person. But both times I’ve gotten stung badly (wasp across the bridge of my nose & wheel bug on my forearm) holding the mashed up leaves on the area sting really did seem to help with pain & swelling. Big time. Might be worth a shot for your poor donkey!

Thanks for the idea! The bush the wasps were in was a wax myrtle. Also known for insect repellent properties. Apparently, those don’t work on wasps, lol.

I have seen that plant, but they are not as common this time of year. Too much competition after a long, hot, rainy summer.

Tony feels much better this morning. No signs of swelling. He’s a little itchy on his nose, but we have a topical for that.
