Noisy during works

I have been a member here since 2008, don’t post much, but read here a lot, you guys are a wealth of horse knowledge.

Would ya’ll mind giving me your thoughts on this runner?

He is known for being noisy. It’s nothing new. I assume that if he needed throat surgery or had some idiopathic disease, Asmussen would be “on it.”

I found a video that has good sound so I could post it up here:

What do you think about this? Is it windsucking, or roaring, or neither?

Neither. Windsucking is cribbing without touching anything so definitely not that. Roaring sounds totally different. Horses have a false nostril, some of which vibrate more than others which is what you are hearing in my opinion. Not unusual to stand at the rail at any show and hear the same thing albeit not as fast as the horse isn’t breathing as hard at the canter as in a work or race.

I agree - false nostril collapsing.

“Windsucking” can also refer to the sound produced by a pneumovagina… but that ain’t it in the video.

I agree with the others, the sound in the video is pretty common.

That’s so quiet I honestly wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t pointed it out. Lucky snorts if he canters or hand gallops. Not a sound I’d worry about.

Wow, thank you so much.

I knew it was going to be something I was not familiar with.

Now, I get to do some research on false nostrils as well, and have and will actually LEARN SOMETHING!

It certainly doesn’t hurt his ability to run! As good a colt as any this year.

Some horses sound like absolute dragons during works.
