Non clumping cat litter for mulitcat household?

OK, I have three cats. In terms of biomass, however, it is probably closer to five. Two good sized ones, one huge. Really, they are big boned (she heard herself say)

Biggest cat has been having constipation issues & had to get roto-rootered at the vets. He has had similar problems in the past, many years ago, but we figured out the right diet, cat bubbler to keep him drinking, etc. He has been fine for years, then this come up again.

I was terrified that I was going to find out he has dead colon or something. Vet thinks he is licking a lot of clumping litter from his feet. Litter box has been a lot wetter lately (yes I clean it daily) due to other cat renal issues (which are being treated).

SO, I need to find a non clumping litter for a bunch of giant cats, one of who pees like the proverbial race horse.

When I had one cat I loved the feline pine, but I gave that up b/c it didn’t work well once I added a cat. If I have to go back to it, I would, but I hoping for other recs.

I have been using Dr Elsey’s & I loved it b/c it doesn’t track & has no scent.

When I was given directive for non clumping litter, I instantly thought of coming here to ask the COTHers. Knowing I could was a big relief.

I am not sure I even remember how to clean regular litter.

Not sure that this matters, but FYI I do have the recommended multiple litter boxes for multiple cats & I clean daily.

I know there are all kinds of thing out there, Newspaper pellets, silicone beads, etc.

Pleas share what you have tried & what you liked.

I think Arm and Hammer has a non-clumping - their stuff is usually good. Back when I used non-clumping, I liked the Kitty Clean brand.

Now I use Kat Attract, but I am not sure it comes in non-clumping.

We use Swheat scoop. Technically, it is a clumping litter, but it clumps very loosely. You have to clean the litter box carefully, or else all the clumps will fall apart on you. I can only imagine it fall apart similarly in the intestines. It’s also a heck of a lot easier to clean than non clumping litter!

It may still be too much clumping for your boy, but it may be worth a shot.

Yesterday’s News. Paper based, clorophyll to deodorise, and comes in two sizes: huge and WTF am I gonna do with this much litter. They say it is flushable (not sure about that) and can be composted. I do know it is very absorbant and there is no smell from the boxes with it.

I use tidy cat non clumping. I have five cats and 3 boxes. I use a liner (Johnny cat is best) scoop daily and change completely twice weekly. I go through two 30 pound bags a week, costs me 12 bucks a week.
I really prefer the clay, i hate having to dispose of clumps of waste daily and to me it has more odor. I just flush solid waste when i scoop.

We use 2 types of litter in the pan at once. We were using tons and tons of kitty litter spending a fortune and the litter was always manky. They’d have their kitty pissing matches and poop battles (war is waged in the litterbox, I tell you) and the litter was out of control.

We use YesterDay’s News (newspaper pellets) as the bottom layer and then TidyCat with the RED stripe (multicat?) on top. 2" pellets, 3" litter. Great combo. We use a lot less litter, the litter doesn’t get manky, lot less tracking, satured wetties don’t stick to the pan and the cats are much happier. The pellets are REALLY good for managing wetties, but NO good for poop or immediate odor control.

I use Swheat scoop as well. It does clump, is edible (ask my grain-allergic dog:mad:), and is flushable/biodegrable. Ask your vet, but I think this would be a good compromise. It comes is 40lb. bags and smaller ones.

The BEST litter (and I’m talking, awesome) is pelleted horse bedding. Not kidding. I LOVE it. Been using it for years now. My friend with 5 cats uses it too.

I posted a similar question here and got fantastic replies. Only difference is I was after clumping. I took the recommendation of some and tried Arm and Hammer brand. So far, so good. No urine smell, clumps decently and I don’t find it everywhere!

They have non clumping kinds too that might work for your kitties.

I get bulk sawdust bedding and switched to it for my 6 litter boxes, too…a lot less painful to dump knowing I can get 14 yards for the cost of 6 bags (per week) @ $6 per bag and do my horses, too!

Same here; I believe it’s exactly the same as the Feline Pine but much less expensive and has a picture of a horse on the 30lb bag instead of a cat on the 15lb bag.

I use horse bedding pellets (Equine Pine, or whatever TSC carries) and they are fantastic. They don’t turn to mush if:

1. you use enough of them. A deep box works really well, I use Sterilite totes and put a good 3-4" in there.

2. Scoop wet spots a bit. One of my cats tends to pee in the corner of the box, and that one corner gets soaked faster. I pick the wet spot like you’d pick a wet spot in a stall. Seems to make the litter last longer and lengthens its non-stinky life.

I just switched over to Tidy Cats Pure Natural - but it is a clumping formula. I don’t know if it’s new but I never saw it before. It smells great fresh out of the bag. I don’t notice much (if any) tracking like I did with the regular Tidy Cats. I’ve tried pellets but my cat will play in those and knock them all over the floor which hurts if you step on them.

For the most part I prefer clumping litter, but I did use non-clumping when my old cat was urinating excessively and I worried about him licking the clumping stuff off of his paws. I tried different kinds of the clay and pine but I think the bottom line is you will have to change it very frequently. Which really isnt that big of a deal and the clay litter tends to be much cheaper than clumping so its probably not any more expensive.

This is a really old thread, but were I looking for a non-clumping litter, I would try out the Blue Buffalo walnut stuff. I use their clumping multicat version and it’s–BY FAR–the best litter I’ve ever used. Does NOT smell, cats like it, and (for the clumping version) it clumps well. It’s also light and I seems to go through a lot less of it than I did clay.
