Non medicated chicken feed and horses

I use non medicated chicken feed as cat litter. My horse has now discovered the dirty cat litter in the trash. Today she broke into the trash and helped herself. I don’t think she ate much (3-4lbs?) before getting busted. How concerned should I be?

i believe the main ingredient is cracked corn followed by calcium carbonate.

I’d not be overly worried. That’s not much. If she got into a whole 50# bag, colic and founder would be a concern.

Pretty gross though :dead:

My horses think chicken feed is THE BEST. As long as it’s not medicated it won’t poison them but it’s pretty much corn, so kind of rich if they get a lot. My pony ate several pounds once and he was fine. But not a good practice.

Mine eat eat it out of the chickens dish if they get a chance. I’ve never heard of using it as cat litter but I guess pound for pound it’s cheaper!

Even medicated chicken feed won’t hurt horses. It’s just amprolium…kind of a fake thiamine. Feeding it long term would probably cause thiamine deficiency but overall it’s pretty benign.
