Have 17 yr. old QH/Belgian mare that is not pregnant but producing clear/pink fluid from one of her teats. It noticed it mildy swollen on 6/24 and then began hosing it am/pm…long story short after a few vet visits, 2 rounds of Excede, Uniprim and then 3 tubes of antibiotics into the teat nothing has worked to stop it from continuing to fill with fluid. Cytology reports say possibility of cancer and we’re waiting on biopsy results to confirm. Bloodwork is good, and nothing on the culture for bacteria. She looks great and is eating great. Udder is swollen in front and now back of teat with a thinck fleshy feeling. No heat or pain when we express fluid from teat am/pm. Any info from those who’ve experienced this would be greatly helpful.
No help, but just jingles and hope that she gets better soon. Take care.
I’ve had mares produce fluid when on certain plants in pasture. I’ve heard it’s clover, but I won’t swear to it. I’ve had two mares who were perfectly healthy do so. But it wasn’t pink, just clear or whitish.
I’ve also had this experience. My vet said the phytoestrogens in some plants (clover, alfalfa, soy, etc.) can sometimes cause mares to bag up and produce fluid.
For the OP, I hope it’s something similarly benign and not cancer or the like.
Did you ever get this resolved? I have a 23 yo TBred mare who has had mastitis off and on for several years. This year, we had a bought in January, and now again in May. The difference is this time the fluid has turned reddish brown and is getting worse in spite of three shots of Exede. Culture came back staph but more likely from external contamination of sample. All other blood work is normal with the exception of the Cushings results which came back positive. The vet has told us not to milk except to get flush a bit of the liquid out. She has also been treated with antibiotics up into the teat. It is only on one side (her left udder). No heat or swelling, so does not appear to be mastitis at this point.
Just wanted to follow-up to see if there had been any resolution.
My Cushings mare never fully dried up after having two foals. One side would always be more full than the other and could express a watery substance easily. Not hot or painful. She foundered on me in 2015, tested for Cushings and early stages of PPID. Put on prascend an her bag has reduced drastically. I have no idea how all of it ties together, but it was weird.
