NON-riding winter pants: What keeps you warm and dry in the cold rain/mist?

Any brand recommendations? Must have: POCKETS! And dry out quickly indoors without having a dryer. Looking at temps of 40s-50s but very raw and wet. Comfortable for walking around all day outside. No style preference. Weight 108/height 5’2" ish.

Cothers are a hardy outdoorsy group! Any recommendations appreciated!

I have a pair of rain pants for if I have to be outside for a very long time in the rain, just a simple waterproof nylon pant. Mine are Lands’ End and were bought on clearance, so a nice price, and I usually would wear them over jeans.

Normally, though, I’m not out that long and it’s not that wet if I am. In that case, a parka length jacket is usually fine for keeping my legs warm and dry enough in regular jeans and my knee-high rubber boots.

The other direction would be an even longer coat. You can get them closer to knee length or even mid-calf, and there are riding styles that are divided for riding if you want double duty. I usually buy a Gore-Tex shell and a little large, and then I can layer underneath as needed.

One of the best things I’ve bought is the Coleman nylon pants from Walmart in their camping/outdoor section. Both waterproof and lightweight for only $20 - I live in those from fall through spring while doing barn chores. I just slip them on over whatever I’m wearing to the barn. I need to get another pair but haven’t had any luck at the Walmarts around me (been out of my size). The couple of pairs I have had lasted forever and air dry in no time at all.

I wear a pair of ski pants when I am working around the farm. They are waterproof, and lined with a soft fleece. I love them! They are really warm, and are still thin enough to move easily. They have deep pockets that zip on the sides. They also have vents that I can unzip should I get too warm. I have worn them for several years now and they still look like new (after I wash them). If these ever wear out I will definitely look for another pair. They were a Christmas present from my husband years ago. I think he got them at a Bass Pro Shop.

Oh, OP, since you are 5’2", you may be able to fit into the youth sizes (either boys or girls), which may save you some money.

I have a pair of knock-off Carhartt insulated bib overalls. I’m only 5’2" as well and fit into the kids XL size, which will probably be HUGE on you since I’m quite a bit more than 108 lbs these days.

Even though they aren’t waterproof, I wear them in the rain/mud all the time and stay dry. There are tons of great pockets on them and they are easy to wash/throw in the dryer when they get nasty! I’m not really sure how I ever survived without them!

I had some great hiking pants from REI, but apparently they quit making them  They looked nice enough to wear out to eat after a day outside.

but I did find these on the REI site:

I would look under hiking pants for something with water resistance, and many of the styles have lots of pockets.

Have fun, whatever it is you have planned!

Good old-fashioned cheap Champion or Russell Athletic fuzzy thick sweat pants.
I wear the ones with elastic around the bottoms on muddy days, which nicely holds them inside my boots. Slacks-type when the ground is frozen. They’re thick and warm, fleecy on the inside, reasonably repellent of hay and shavings on the outside, and take a loonnnnnggg time to soak through in the rain.

If they get wet, 8 hours on the radiator has them good to go for the next feeding shift and I just keep swapping pairs until both are ready for the wash. I’ve got 3 pair that are at LEAST 8 years old now and totally indestructible. And did I mention they have POCKETS?

The hell with fashion–be comfortable doing your barn work!

Every year I go to Target and get two pairs of boy’s “L” snowboarding pants. (I am 5’ tall, 105 lb). They have pockets, knee re-enforcements, and they are black (none of which attributes the girl’s snowboard pants share)
They last me the winter and each pair cost under $20.
I LOVE Them.

More warm than waterproof, but I love my Schmidt’s (faux Carhartts) insulated bib overalls from TSC. They come in short/med/long lengths at each size so small/short for me at 5’0" fits well.

I think hiking gear is your best bet. If you’re really going to be out all day in these clothes and moving around a lot, good performance gear is worth the cost.

Though I haven’t tried these particular pants, I usu. have great luck with Columbia products-- here is their lineup of performance pants. This one gives you water repellency, pockets, quick-dry material.
There’s a big difference in comfort between 50s and misty, and 40s and misty. I’d prob put the big money on pants that work well for the 50s, but also pack running tights to wear as a base layer when its in the 40s.

Never thought of ski pants. Awesome idea!

Thanks for the suggestions, especially the ski pants and the Columbia ones. I will be doing lots of walking outdoors in France in February and I don’t want to look like an American tourist slob if I can help it.

YES

I have three pairs of these pants and they are AWESOME.

I am living in them. I like the brown a lot better than the black…the black really seems to catch cat hair and dirt and stuff more than the brown. I really don’t think it’s just that the black shows it better, but maybe.

S1969 brought them up on another thread and I am grateful!

Not waterproof, but very warm

I have two pair of flannel lined jeans and one pair of fleece lined jeans. I prefer these to overalls because it makes bathroom breaks easier. Flannels lined jeans and my Outback full length raincoat can get me through a lot nasty, rainy weather.

I wear completely waterproof pants like dairy farmers wear to milk in. You can get overall style, but mine are just pants with an elasticated waist. I wear an old raincoat on the top half. Even in the coldest, wettest weather I can wear a basic pair of pants (e.g. trackpants… or even PJ pants :)) underneath and am 100% snug and dry when I take them off to come inside.

I just bought a cheapie pair of used snowpants on Ebay and am watching a couple of other Ebay auctions on Columbia snowboard pants. Excellent idea! I have my eye on a kids’ XL size, also. You people are brilliant.
