She says she gets $250 a month in disability payments. If she’s talking about federal government “disability” through the Social Security Administration, which is what most people mean by “disability,” that means that she’s only considered partly disabled, and a pretty low percentage at that, or that her income is high enough that she’s not considered to need it. For someone who hasn’t worked and contributed to Social Security, 100 percent disability is about $1000 a month now. If you worked enough to qualify for SSDI instead of SSI, it’s more.
@anon67413619 I totally admit this is idle curiosity on my part, but you said you know this poster and her horse under a different screen name? Do you recall the screen name? Does her story track? Are we being unfair?
Totally not trashing anyone for taking Fiorecet. It’s a perfectly fine medication for occasional use, but when a patient is taking it so often that they start buying meds from foreign countries, it’s a red flag for potential abuse.
Hugs from a fellow migraine sufferer.
I recall the screen name. Her story lines up, posting style is the same, and COTH response is similar.
Anyone who has been on this forum long enough who looked at certain topics probably remembers this poster.
Ah, found it. You were right. On all counts.
Very sad. I hope, despite everything, there is some form of peace for the OP beyond which an online forum—and those who can’t see things firsthand—can provide.
I personally cannot understand someone being in the equine industry for 35+ years and never experiencing the need for a horse to be euthanized.
In the last 20 years alone, I have had to euthanize 4 of my own, 3 due to age and 1 due to what our vet thought was aneurysm that paralyzed the mare.
I also happen to be the one friends call when they cannot be there when their horses go, but want someone there.
It is absolutely insulting to insist that a euthanization is “killing a horse”. Absolutely appalling! Humane death is nothing of the sort!
Link please? Since it’s a public post on COTH, I don’t see any reason why the screen name or prior thread needs to be hidden, does it?
I am that friend too.
I am with you and find it insulting that someone would call euthanizing a horse “Killing a horse”.
This part was where things started really sounding not right to me. I don’t see how that is even possible. I started riding at age 12 and by 18 I had already known several horses that had to be euthanized. By my mid-20s I’d been present at several euthanasias including sitting with horses whose owners just couldn’t do it. Now in my 40s I wouldn’t even be able to count them all if I tried. It’s just a fact of life when dealing with animals that don’t live as long as we do and have incredibly fragile bodies for their size. And having bucketloads of money has nothing to do with it either. There are horrible medical/physical things that happen to horses that can’t be prevented or cured no matter how many dollars you throw at the situation. (I’m also wondering where on earth a barn manager or vet tech makes enough to have 5K in disposable income per month.)
I have had 1-3 horses at all times (total of 9 horses) since I was 15 and am now 67. I have only had to have one horse euthanized. He was 29 and had his 4th or 5th laminitic episode and rapidly dropping weight. I was not present. I took him to the vets and owing to it being mid-summer, he asked if they could euthanize in the morning when the truck would be there shortly after. I agreed. I said my goodbyes and gave him the biggest delicious pile of leafy alfalfa and left (he had had bute earlier in the day). I kind of regret that but that is what I did and I can’t change it.
But yes, reality is that euthanasia is only a moment away for any of them be it old age or trauma/disease. That is horses. I am so glad we have that option for our animals.

And that NOPE train came a chugging…
Poof pooof! Chugga chugga Poof Poof!
Too Bad for PeregrineWhutsherName the QFP feature doesn’t work that way.
She can NOPE her way to the Moon & back & the thread still stands in all its twisty glory.
She “kilt” her horse (allegedly) but the thread lives on.
Stale-ish Cardbordeaux & brownish guac, anyone?
ETA:
Apparently the NOPE Train stopped at Station Post#191
Or does that live on as a Warning to any who may consider KILLING their problems
I think the poster started riding horses 35 years ago and doesn’t have 35 solid years of experience. We know at least 8 years have been out of horses, so that would be more like 27 years. Even then they may have ridden off and on through out their life. Maybe they had a job working at a barn one time. Owned this one horse and boarded it another. Their experience doesn’t match anyone else’s so I’m inclined to believe all of their experience is exaggerated and they have been a professional for maybe a few years time.
This was where the OP began to lose me (aside from the fact that she kept throwing around numbers - how much she used to make, how much she spends on her horses, how much she used to spend on board, etc.). But it was as if she felt we euthanized our horses to simply get rid of expensive problems.
To be honest, I also felt insulted when she talked about spending $5,000/month on this horse once, and that she would have spent more if she’d had it, because she had no other expenses . . . I don’t even make $5,000/month, let alone have it to spend on my horses.
You and me both, and they made it sound like if you did not spend that much you could not love your horse as much as you should.
Yes, that’s exactly the feeling I got, too.
Because I like a good train wreck, I’d love a hint to the previous thread from same person. If my train wreck appetite is just cheap and tacky, ignore my request!
Same.
Initially I felt terrible for the OP and I continued to feel for them despite being frustrated by their responses, but this latest “Nope” flurry of edits has me wanting to see the previous threads too.
On the other hand, I am relieved that the title changed to “Nope”, because the original title was giving me anxiety about being unemployed.
I guess I’m cheap and tacky too, because I do love a good train wreck once in a while. Who’s got a clue?
Looks like @LookinForSpace was dead on with the need to QFP as the OP tried to poof everything.
