Nope

Also the lack of her personal dental care (15 years) way predates her accident-related loss of income (8 years), so it’s questionable whether she could really “afford” this horse irrespective of current circumstance.

Occasional use is no big deal but 20 days/month and the fact she is taking so much her doc cut her off = problem territory.

The only reason I placed any credence in the narrative after a point was the fact some posters said they remembered her and the horse under another screen name years ago.

Were you on speaking terms with the person caring for your horse? Because from what I understand, OP refuses to call BO and even voice concerns for the horse.

Knowing your horse is ok and someone caring for them is vastly different than not knowing if your horse is ok. The horse is not 5 or 15, he’s 30. Many issues arrive at 30.

I am not trying to trash the OP, I just believe that honesty has its place and so does proper animal care. I’ve been in animal rescue and I’ve seen some horrific situations from owners with the same kind of mentality.

She really did not say the horse had no dental care. She said:

And then said:

There are a whole lot of issues with this whole situation, but the state of this horse’s teeth is really an unknown, and it’s not very fair to just assume his mouth hasn’t been cared for. Perhaps the BO is covering that, perhaps Peregrine is paying for a dentist that’s a different one from the “very expensive horse dentist” the BO “yelled” at her about not being able to afford. Maybe the BO shamed her into covering the “very expensive” guy. But we really don’t know. Similarly, we don’t know who’s paying for the vet, since Peregrine said:

(Emphasis mine.)

This is a terribly sad set of circumstances, but the fact remains that the horse is 30, and they generally don’t get to that age without some pretty attentive care. I totally agree that Peregrine owes it to both herself and the horse to discuss these matters with the barn owner and reopen that line of communication, but making assumptions here about that care doesn’t accomplish much.

Oh I agree. And yes, I was in communication with the caretaker.

I just meant that the basic first question was “what to do with an aged horse that is still healthy enough, when you can no longer afford the full board situation the circumstances of both horse and owner require?”

It wasn’t a question of “is it time to euth for humane reasons?”

I agree that not being on speaking terms with the barn owner, leaving all your gear there untouched for 8 years, and not even trying to see your horse is a recipe for disaster. If the person caring for the horse is honest and competent then all is well, but you cannot know this without going out to view.

@sunkistbey I’m glad the drug helps you & inexpensively.

@fordtraktor Ex-friend’s Dr did not cut her off, just refused to write for refills as often she desired.
So she ordered more, on her own, from Canada & overdosed so she undoubtedly suffered rebound headaches, took more, etc. Vicious Circle.

@Impractical_Horsewoman Have you been on this BB long enough to recall a poster who claimed to breed & show, even sold a horse to another COTHer.
Then, when she was at KY Horse Park, supposedly demoing her breed, had her horses seized by AC. Charge was abuse & neglect, apparently she had a history of same.
Screen personas, complete with pics, can lie.

I thought that a month ago.

Just want to throw this out there. I’ve taken butabital/fioricet for over 30 years for severe migraines (3 day pukers once a week migraines) along with beta-blockers and anti-seizure meds. It’s not always addictive and it, with the other two meds, are the only treatment that has ever worked. I take the same amount as I did when I started on it many moons ago, maybe less. I never had the urge to take more or abuse it.

I only get occasional migraines however, I am on beta blockers for a condition that messes with my heart rate. Prior to being on them I had chronic headaches though. The beta blockers significantly reduced the occurrence of the headaches!

Or, say, when the OP got hurt 8 years ago, the BO kindly cut the board in half to $1000 and paid for the equine dentist and other horsey needs herself. Then, after ‘some’ years with the OP never visiting her horse in person, and the horse in some/a lot of discomfort, the BO decides to have the horse put down. BO decides, also, to recoup her loss of the 50% by pretending that the horse is alive, at least up until she, the BO, breaks even on what she paid for/would have been due by caring for the horse. Periodically, the BO sends a picture of the (deceased) horse to the OP from an album of hundreds of THAT horse’s pictures she has.

IF the OP calls, the BO only has to say, “I was JUST going to call you. ‘Horsey’ just dropped dead’, and the people who take the body away have just left. They were in the area to pick up another horse/had to do it today/couldn’t come for another week, so 'Horsey’s body is already gone. I have cut a bit of ‘Horsey’s’ mane off for you (from Horsey or another of similar coloring) if you would like it. I am SO sorry for your loss.”

NOT saying that the BO in question is dishonest or this happened. But with SUCH an absentee owner—YEARS!—why not?

@PeregrineHagen Does the barn owner ever make any comments when she sends the photos? Ask you anything? Or just send photos, no other communication?

Just trying to get a complete picture here.

This scenario crossed my mind too.

Putting the responses all together helps create a better picture of the OP’s perspective.
