North NJ Jumper barns

Can anyone recommend a good jumper trainer in the north NJ area?
I have a difficult horse, I am looking for someone that is not abusive towards the animals, challenging is fine but slow and steady has worked best with this horse up until this point. I am looking for a trainer that does some of the A shows, with some locals; I am looking for a barn that does not require you to go to Florida for the winter as that is not an option. An indoor is preferred. The budget is under $1000 per month.

Anyone have an idea of what board is at Redfield with Emil Spadone?

Will be tough to find totaling under $100 per month. The property taxes and expenses are so high in NJ that barns have a hard time Charging under that.

If you don’t have access to an indoor, you will lose months of riding time due to snow, ice and the cold winter weather. Nothing wrong with that, but realistically, if you took 2-3 months off from riding due to not having an indoor, it could take you a good month to get your horse legged back up. Not sure I’d want to aim for A shows if I was going to be out of the tack for 25%+ of the year. Zone II is very competitive.

I would concur with Chunky. Northern NJ isn’t cheap. Land, taxes, insurance, labor, etc. are quite costly. The further west you are willing to travel the less costly things become.

I don’t know if they are in your budget, but it might be worth contacting Palermo Stables. I understand they are reasonably priced for the area and what they offer. They run some shows on property so that would help save a few dollars.

At my previous barn, there was a rider with two relatively green jumper horses with aims of A-rated shows who moved to North Jersey for several months. She boarded at Palermo Stables and seemed very pleased with it, particularly the training her horses received. She’s not there now because she had to move again due to her job.

After 2 years of lurking, I’m finally moved to make a first post! We board and train at Brookside Show Stable in Hillsborough. It’s not under $1000 for full training board, and may be slightly further south than you want to go, but the owner and head trainer is excellent and it is low drama and a very friendly place! She has a website and a Facebook if you search the name. Best of luck!

It’ll be tough to find anyone doing A shows, with an indoor, for under $1k per month. I can’t say enough good things about Leah Epstein’s Ithilien Stables in Whitehouse. All about the patient, slow and steady progress.

They do a lot of jumpers, not a super fancy barn but horses are well cared for & they are very competitive in the jumpers

Consider NY or PA, there are no taxes so things tend to be a bit cheaper. Winter Haven has a great rep. Ri-Arm Farm is great albeit pricey… you would be working with Mark Leone. I grew up in this area, so I know it well!
