Northrun Ashland saddle

There is a beautiful Northrun Ashland saddle for sale on facebook, can anyone tell me more about the brand?

Ashland or Ashland II? One has a slight cutback to the pommel, one doesn’t.

I found they run a tad bit narrow. Foam panels, but a well-balanced, with decent leather cc saddle. If it would fit the horse I had and the price was right, I’d absolutely buy it.

If it’s on eBay, it’s probably not expensive. They don’t have a great re-sale value, but I’ve owned 2 for 15+ years, and I have nothing negative to say. Mine was the original Ashland with the cutback- love that saddle! Very well made, good balance, great saddles!

Used to own one until it didn’t fit my new horse… I absolutely loved it!!!

I have ridden in a few. Seem to be very balanced and nice. Like jen-s said, probably best for a medium or narrow horse.

I think I know the one you’re talking about. If I’d had the cash, you wouldn’t even be here asking

Get it. They don’t pop up too often. I have the original with the cutback. Runs a little narrow. So comfortable!! Great leather.

You can get more info at northrun.com. I rode in a demo, very well made, really nice leather, well balanced, Northrun makes an excellent product for a very reasonable price. I made several phone calls before trying one, the owners answer the phone and are so accommodating, not only did they answer all my questions but they arranged to ship it to a local tack shop for me, since the only shop that carries their product was a 45 minute drive for me. They couldn’t be nicer. And if you buy one new you have lots of options as to leather type, color, etc., just as you do with the French saddles.

The owner of Northrun Saddlery is somehow related to the people who owned Crump. Their tack is made in England and I find to be excellent and EXCELLENT prices.
A local professional rode several horses in one of their demo saddles a few years ago and gave me only positive feedback about the saddle.

Yes, actually. I called them once inquiring about something and I forget exactly how it came to be, but the owner told me that they used to be/be part of BT Crump. He said the Ashland Saut d’Or is based on the PDS.

i absolutely loved mine as did several other clients of my trainers - they tried mine and then purchased. I’d still have mine as well if it fit my horse

I love these saddles! If mine fit my gelding I would never of sold it. My high withered Tb just didn’t fit their make but I still miss the saddle to this day. Wonderful balance and they wear like iron. I had mine for a sold 12 years and rode in it a ton, still sold it for several hundred dollars.

Are you still looking for an Ashland saddle. If so I have one I want to sell.

I know this thread is a little dated, but I started my own thread and so far have had no response, so maybe someone who was originally on this thread will see this and reply…My daughter has outgrown our Ashland saddle and I need to sell it to buy her a new saddle. I have had trouble determining a value for the Ashland because they seem to be so “rare”, I can’t find anything else out there as a comp. I did email Ashland and get some good feedback from the owner and I posted it on the FB tack pages (trying to avoid eBay bc of their high fees) but I’ve had no interest so far. I’ve seen that many of you who have or have had Ashland saddles are extremely fond of them and I’m hoping you all can help me with determining a good value and where might be the best place to advertise. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, or if you know someone who loves your saddle and is looking for one like it, that would be even better.

I’m not sure they’re rare. They’re still bring made?!

I meant that it is rare to see used ones on the market. If I search for used Crosby, Pessoa, Bevel, etc. I get many returns. I rarely see used Ashlands.

Plenty in this area, it’s not a trendy brand and a bit out of favor nowadays. Maybe price it like an older Pessoa based on condition?!

They really don’t have an enormous resale value, although they’re great saddles. I have one of the old school ones when the leather was really really good and it’s held up for 15 or so years. I’d say around the price of a used Pessoa makes sense.

I agree with Trixie. I sold mine 2/3 years ago for about $600. It didn’t have the great leather but I adored that saddle, rode in it for years and it had great balance. Good luck!
