Noseband after cheek tooth removal?

My guy had his 209 molar removed a couple weeks ago and is cleared back at least for light work. He’s a short faced Icelandic and all my nose bands are too close to that area for my comfort. I out my side pull up to his face, and I have the same issue w the jowl strap for that.

He seems to not be fond of drops (he has kinda a weird nose).

Will start him back w/o a noseband, but I’m concerned about having the bit pull thru his mouth if something makes him jump sideways.

Was wondering what other ppls experiences were after this type of tooth got removed re: nosebands.

Honestly nosebands do nothing unless they are super tight and crank the mouth shut, and then they do bad things. You are fine with no nosebands.

Only fine unless I have to do a one rein stop……bit totally pulls thru…

The purpose of a noseband is to “attach the standing martingale to”. It is not for tying the horse’s mouth shut. If you are not using a standing martingale, it is decorative only. If you are having issues with the bit pulling through the mouth, a full cheek snaffle will stop that. Or a D ring snaffle. Also, creating a softer feel between your hand and his mouth, so that he responds with a lighter touch.

Am looking at a full cheek in the same mouth, $$$, tho.

Really? I see basic stainless steel bits going for $30 new and half that second hand. No more expensive than a new noseband.

I’ve never had a bit go through my horses mouth. In a one rein emergency stop you keep hold of the outside rein.

You can also put a chinstrap on a snaffle which is not ideal for dressage but something you see Western riders do to keep the bit more stable.

I feel if there is more than one time a year when the bit goes through the horses mouth, you need a whole new retraining plan, not just tying the mouth shut.

If he were going in that type of bit, sure. He ain’t.

What bit is he currently ridden in?

Bit guards. Get one of the kinds that has a slit for installation and it’ll work regardless of the cheeks on your bit. They’re thin enough that they shouldn’t compromise the fit.

Would a chin strap, like some Western horses wear in a snaffle, work?

He’s currently in a Neue schule bit w 2 inch rings on the cheeks….I thot of using a bit hobble, but there isn’t really room. Ditto for bit guards.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I ride with no nose band and have never come close to pulling the bit through the mouth. How many times are you having to do a one rein stop? I would just put a good leather curb strap on it.

If you really want a noseband, you could make a leather loop that goes through one cheek piece , over the nose, and through the other cheek piece. So it is just over the bridge and not under.
